AIBU to not bother with Christmas food?

I don’t have anything against Christmas food, I just haven’t really bothered this year and I’m genuinely fine about it.

I rarely ever cook and tonight I’m making a lamb curry. It’s Christmas Eve and I haven’t bought any specific Christmas food at all. No turkey, no trimmings, no posh cheese.

I did have some biscuits yesterday and a chocolate orange about a week ago, so it’s not like I’m actively avoiding festive things.

I realise this might sound a bit sad written down, but it honestly doesn’t feel sad to me. Christmas has just crept up and this is where I’ve landed.

AIBU, or are plenty of people just eating what they fancy without much fuss?

We are the same this year. None of us like turkey so we arent having that. We aren't having a traditional dinner.

MiddleAgedDread · 24/12/2025 21:11

It’s the same here, someone else is cooking Xmas dinner tomorrow (it won’t be turkey!) but looking in the fridge you wouldn’t know it’s Xmas. I think I’ve seen a box of mince pies stashed somewhere which could
give a clue…..

Well I’m having pizza out the freezer tomorrow. Hopefully after I’ve finally painted the bathroom. It’s just another day. If you’re happy (and I am!) then you do whatever it is that makes you happy. Christmas and all its attendant ‘ must do/must get etc’ is really quite over rated when you think about it.

have what you want, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks

Left to my own devices I'd probably buy a small turkey crown or breast and some stuffing, maybe some bacon, and spend a couple of days living on cold turkey and stuffing sarnies while watching films and crocheting. Oh, and either a trifle or a black forest gateau because I'd want a bit of a change for breakfast 😁

Me and my mum have cooked some mini pizzas, some sausage rolls and some vegan "sausage" rolls for tomorrow. Then tomorrow we're cooking garlic bread, buttering some sliced baguette and putting out some sweet treats.

This year is our first year as a family of three (we recently moved out of my stepdads house) and we feel so much better knowing that we won't be forced to eat a fully cooked Christmas meal, but are able to just have a chilled out, buffet-style type of food ☺️

We don’t do Christmas dinner. It’s 5 of us this year, all adults, and it’s basically picky bits all day. Everyone I tell is allegedly jealous but wouldn’t do it themselves for a variety of complicated guilt ridden reasons! But each to their own .

Miranda65 · 24/12/2025 23:18

We never do, because don't particularly like the traditional stuff.
I bought a box of mince pies - that's it.
We do also have a fridge full of cheese, but that's an all year round thing!
Why can't people just eat what they like? There are no rules.

I’m only cooking for me and my DF tomorrow- beef bourgignon has been cooked and is stewing overnight. It’s a revelation not doing a turkey and DF actively prefers the bourgignon. Love that for me.

Do what you like and enjoy it.

If you rarely cook how do you eat? Do you live on takeaways?
