Should I reconfirm to let work know I won’t be at work Tom

Working tomorrow 730-4pm however DH is in hospital overnight & I won’t be able to attend work tomorrow. I did mention to the Management the situation & I will update them and I did phone work when I left (phone no one answered Management leave late) & emailed however I had no reply. Close Work Colleague who I work with said to me she would let them know tomorrow morning 730am that I did try phoning and emailing and the situation with my DH in hospital meaning I won’t be able to attend work tomorrow. Should I reconfirm again tomorrow morning I won’t be at work? It’s not a case of leaving my Work Colleague to get involved however I did phone/email them as well.

Also seeing as Work knows and the countless times I’ve tried contacting them I don’t see the point in phoning again to let them know the full details.

Apologies, I thought you’d rang 3 times and not managed to actually speak to anyone, and followed up with an email. Didn’t realise it was more than that.
I’d keep trying periodically until I managed to actually speak to someone in person, because otherwise it would be hanging over my head. But we’re all different and if you think you’ve done enough then that’s fine.

It’s fine don’t worry 😉

You've phone three times and sent an email, it's hardly 'countless'. Just keep calling until someone picks up.

Thats your opinion
Hope you realise from my Post that Management were aware my DH was hospital and I think I did more than necessary to contact them

Screenshot your phone log as a record just in case.
Email them the screen shot if they are arsey
Hope he's OK

Fangisnotacoward · 24/12/2025 10:29

E mail them a screenshot of your call log as others suggested. If you can't get an answer at least you can evidence you've tried multiple times

Tried phoning this morning but no one picked up phone so emailed to let them know (they are in office 7am so tried twice just after that time around 710am). I have no direct line to any Management. Emailed me back to say that’s fine but they would have preferred a phone call as they got the email after my work start time. However I do think that as I did try contacting yesterday and this morning by phone it’s unreasonable of them to suggest I try phoning instead of emailing.

Reply, by email explaining that you trued to phone but no-one picked up. Did you leave a message? Is there a facility to do that? I would also mention that you tried yesterday to phone but got no reply.

I know I’m late to this but if I knew my team member’s partner was in the hospital I would not assume that was them calling off work. Unless it’s truly a traumatic situation and then it would be a request for compassionate leave. So I would need to hear that specifically (but email would be allowed in my workplace policy)

I did not call in sick I phoned to say my DH was hospital and I wouldn’t be in & emailed the same thing

Yes, you keep mentioning it...

Emailed me back to say that’s fine but they would have preferred a phone call as they got the email after my work start time.

...but they clearly still want you to call in and have told you so.

and I think I did more than necessary to contact them

On what planet is two missed calls 'more than necessary'? It's literally the bare minimum.

However I do think that as I did try contacting yesterday and this morning by phone it’s unreasonable of them to suggest I try phoning instead of emailing.

No, it isn't unreasonable. That's their policy. And from the perspective of someone who's been in your bosses shoes, it seems like you're making a deliberate effort to avoid speaking to them on the phone.

You say you can't keep calling as you're with your husband waiting to speak to Doctors all day, but you've got time for MumsNet 🤷🏻‍♂️

Neverflyingagain · 24/12/2025 11:21

As others have said, I would cover your back as the manager in today seems awkward. Screenshot your call log, forward to whoever is your actual line manager along with Ms Awkward Manager's email saying you should have phoned. If she tries to cause ructions your line manager can bat them back and shut them down quickly.
I say this with a union hat on. It's worth 5 minutes today to avoid hassle down the line.

Bitzee · 24/12/2025 11:27

I’d just reply and say thanks for confirming receipt of your email and that you understand you’re supposed to call and you did twice last night and again this morning at 7:10 but no answer. Copy in your manager. Screenshot your call logs and save them just in case they’re needed but I wouldn’t send them unless they take it further as it looks a bit defensive. Hopefully that’ll be the end of it. And I hope your husband is on the mend soon.

Considering I did let them know before I left and updated them yesterday by phone/email and again this morning by phone and no one replied back and emailing again I do think this Deputy Manager who is stepping down after Xmas (so officially today is her last day as part of Management team) is being very unreasonable here. Also my close work colleague I work with did mention to her when she got in 730 as well I would not be in

So have you replied pointing all that out?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 24/12/2025 11:38

Unless he's critically ill Id expect you to be in wirk until you leave early for afternoon visiting.

That unfortunately wouldn’t be enough information for my HR team. There’s no policy about someone’s partner being in hospital - I think you need to be clear about what you want here. Are you putting in for leave? Does your workplace have carer emergency leave? I would need some sort of guidance from you to start the process.

I hope your husband is better soon

cantbebothered101 · 24/12/2025 20:29

You’ve done everything you can, for your own peace of mind write down each phone call and email and the time so you have everything on record should work query anything.
