To be feeling just a little bit scared

Just got home from GP appointment. Had sudden hearing loss in one ear about 10 days ago. Now constant tinnitus - no let up.

Thought I'd possibly get antibiotics or maybe told it was a virus.

The GP rang the hospital and told ent sho that I was for 7 day pathway. Consultant told GP that if I don't hear from hospital in next 2 days I have to contact the hospital.

I was sent away with prescription for steroids - 12 a day. I had to make a round trip of 40 miles in rush hour traffic to get them as local pharmacies had closed.

I got home and vomited - I am literally sick with worry.

I haven't had earache, no glands up, no sore throat, no cold/flu. I feel fine apart from constant headache, tinnitus and loss of hearing.

My DD had something similar a few months ago. She was prescribed the steroids quickly.
We did see a consultant after a few weeks, when she still was suffering from hearing loss. He thought it was caused by a virus.
She has made a complete recovery.
I hope you do too.

I've been to the hospital today. Signifiant hearing loss on right. I've lost a bit of balance but I'm not feeling dizzy/nauseous.

I start tapering off the steroids on Wednesday.

I'm waiting for another hearing test.

The tinnitus is keeping me awake. That and the loud heartbeat on that side of my head.

On the plus side - I feel fantastic on steroids.

I'm coming to terms with the altered sensations and possible permanent damage.

No idea as yet what's caused it.

I'm sorry you have hearing loss. It's such a shock isn't it?
Hopefully in time you may regain some of it. This is is more likely in the next month or so than down the track.
Its good that the steroids are not making you feel like crap - this is usually the case!
