Does it need 7 people (3 adults and 4 kids) to do a food shop?

Braved today at 7am. Saw entire families shopping. One example was two parents, 4 DC and one of the parents’ DM. Kids were, guessing between 4-12.

Why couldn’t at least one of the adults stayed at home looking after the kids? Two were bored (think being dragged out of bed didn’t help them) and the other two were demanding “can we have this?”.

Please keep shopping numbers to a minimum. It will help you, other shoppers and staff.

Get a grip.

HeadyLamarr · 23/12/2025 18:34

Why care? It's no skin off my nose if someone treats a trip to Aldi like a family outing.

verycloakanddaggers · 23/12/2025 18:34

Some people want to do things as a family.

I think you just have to let people live their lives.

Sunshineclouds11 · 23/12/2025 18:35

I was out shopping this morning, plenty families around, some kids in PJs, didn't bother me.

Clefable · 23/12/2025 18:35

MN hates children being taken places but then also hates when children don’t behave in places because they are never taken there so haven’t learned how to behave.

Sometimes we all end up in the supermarket together and I don’t give a shiny shit what anyone else thinks about it. We like going places together and it’s a supermarket, not the trenches.

Team OP here! Adults should shop solo! It’s not a team sport!

ThisIsMyBurnerPhone · 23/12/2025 18:36

My kids love the Christmas food shop. They get excited about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

DemBonesDemBones · 23/12/2025 18:36

Absolutely none of your business!

Absolutely!

I always find it bizarre too when the whole family goes as if it is a fun day out. I find it much easier to do the shop when DH is home so I don't have to take the children with me.

Hankunamatata · 23/12/2025 18:37

Agree op. It's like entire families including grandparents heading to bandq during lock down.

No your kids are not cute blocking the isle, running about, touching everything in the supermarket.

I've moved to online completely this year

Dweetfidilove · 23/12/2025 18:37

Plenty families out today. Some enjoying themselves, some helping and some just being there.
It's also not a bad thing for them to experience exactly what goes into the magical Christmas their parents create for them.

Butchyrestingface · 23/12/2025 18:38

Maybe they like food shopping? I enjoyed it as a kid.

lazyarse123 · 23/12/2025 18:40

We are pensioners and we shop together mostly. Just another reason to hate us i suppose
The only time we took all the kids when they were younger was when we were on holiday somewhere. Hope that's allowed.

Your aldi must have significantly wider aisles than mine does, no way do I want to be delayed by a whole family having a jolly on one of the busiest shopping days blocking movement

By all means go en masse but maybe make sure you're in single file and don't fanny about in front of the fridges and freezers deliberating ever minor decision and holding up the rest of us who don't need to crowd source whether to buy 4 or 6 pints of milk

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 23/12/2025 18:41

Our children love the Christmas food shop. Their dad says “fire it in” whenever they pick anything up they remotely fancy so it’s a huge treat for them. It’s a two trolley mission!

Purlant · 23/12/2025 18:41

Who cares? Let others live their lives. Maybe they think it’s a festive outing and affordable treats. Much cheaper than a Santa visit.

HeddaGarbled · 23/12/2025 18:41

That’ll be all those women who can’t drive.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/12/2025 18:42

I mean it's not my idea of fun but maybe they were all going somewhere afterwards?

tiredofchristmas · 23/12/2025 18:45

My other half was working so I had to take 2 toddlers with me. If you think I did it for fun you are very much mistaken!

Nevermind17 · 23/12/2025 18:47

I always have to do the big shop with DH as I can’t push the trolley unless it’s empty. If my DM wants to go we take her too, as she can’t get to the supermarket herself and doesn’t drive. Luckily our DCs are older now but if they were little they’d have to come too.

lazyarse123 · 23/12/2025 18:47

Although i do have to say i went in Aldi today alone, bloody milk carton we bought yesterday had split. There was a dad with two kids the girl was about 10 and putting stuff in the trolley and the dad shouted at her "just get the cheesecake stuff and put the rest of this shit back". I thought that was awful and really wanted to say something but what would have happened if i had? If he couldn't cope he should have gone alone. Being stressed is no excuse either.

TimeForATerf · 23/12/2025 18:48

I’ve been to Tesco Saturday, Sainsbury’s Sunday, Lidl yesterday and Sainsbury’s again today. I’ve not seen a single child other than babes. Unlike usual school holidays. Maybe one parent drives but is useless, maybe they drive and the other parent does the shop and mum comes along as she has no other way of getting her shopping.

Who cares. Parking was the biggest issue, not even queues at checkout and definitely not children tagging along.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2025 18:49

This is a regular thread topic. It used to be a whole family affair when we did the Christmas shop before the days of home delivery. There were 12 of us to shop for so we needed two trollies.

There’s nothing dreamier for me than shopping without my DC being pests. Went today with my 5yo and 1yo and, whilst they were very good, it would have been far more peaceful to be there by myself.

Dontyoulooktired · 23/12/2025 18:49

I can’t say I’d notice to be honest.

I wouldn’t ever take mine shopping though. The occasions I have, the bickering drives me insane.
