To eat last year's pickled onions?

I have half a massive jar of pickled onions in the cupboard which are left over from last Christmas. They've been opened. I'm hoping that I can eat them instead of rush out tomorrow for some substandard supermarket ones.

YABU - don't do it you fool!
YANBU - yeah they'll be fine!

If they've been opened, there's a pretty good chance they've gone soft by now.

TinselTitts · 23/12/2025 16:21

I've done this loads.

Sometimes they've been perfect but other time the onions have gone soft and mushy.

Well you've still got time to find out. Try one now

FeliciaFancybottom · 23/12/2025 16:25

I wouldn't eat them if they've been open for a year.

TheWonderhorse · 23/12/2025 16:25

Judging by the responses I'm going to have to try one, aren't I? It's against the rules. We have a no Christmas food until Christmas Eve rule. I've told the kids that breaking that rule is punishable by death so I hope they don't come at me with pitchforks.

Are picked onions a Christmas food?

Its last year's leftovers, not this year's supply. That rule doesn't count.

Don't worry, they'll never get the pitchforks in the jar.

The point of pickling is to preserve things. They’ll be fine if they are still pleasant to eat.

Judging by the responses, 37% of people don't understand what pickling is for.

I can't think why you wouldn't eat them.

TheWonderhorse · 23/12/2025 16:31

They are in the Christmas cupboard above the Christmas fridge. So they are Christmas food.

Give me an hour and I'll report back.

I don't think pickling grants the onion immortality, which is unfortunate.
