To think that films should be no more than 90 mins long

DC want to see the new Avatar film. It’s 3 hours and 20 minutes long!! WTF?!?!

Not a chance will I manage not to go the loo for that long. Everyone in the cinema is likely to have to get up to go to the loo and miss part of the film. No mention of an intermission.

There’s just no need. 90 minutes is the correct length for a film. Anything else is just the director’s ego.

100%

You don't have to watch it. Kindly.. choose shorter films.

Sartre · 23/12/2025 11:03

Totally agree. I can stretch to two hours if it’s a great film but anything beyond this is insanity. I saw the final Stranger Things episode is over 2 hours long and I’m already dreading it.

My DH likes LOTR and I think it’s utter trash, literally 9 hours of white men chasing after a ring. I fell asleep.

landlordhell · 23/12/2025 11:04

I wouldn’t go if it was any longer. We watched Oppenheimer but over 2 nights. I think I’m traumatised by a school trip to watch Ghandi when I was 11! 4 hrs!!
Edit: Just googled and it’s 3 hr 11 but obviously at 11 we exaggerated. 😂

I don't mind a long film at all, depending on the film.

I could watch all the LOTR films back to back and be fine.

Titanic not so much.

But you would have a loo break in between the films right?

No I can go all day without needing to pee, I am aware this is pretty unusual though.

Housewife2010 · 23/12/2025 11:22

The new Avatar is quite short. 🤣. Try my favourite film, Gone With the Wind at 3 hours 44 minutes!

cathyj77 · 23/12/2025 11:23

2 hours 15 max unless it’s a world class masterpiece that has an actual reason to be that long, like the Godfather. This isn’t true of most 3 hour films.

Numberblocky · 23/12/2025 11:25

I quite like a long film at the cinema. Feel as if I am getting my money's worth 😂

That said, Wicked really took the mickey. That did not need to be two films, one of which was over three hours long.

Miranda65 · 23/12/2025 11:25

Anyone who can't sit for 3 hours without a loo break maybe needs to see a doctor?
Sometimes a long film (if the script is good) will just sweep you away, and you won't care about the time.... "Gandhi" was a cracker.

NutellasKitchen · 23/12/2025 11:27

Bollywood films I can. I can watch Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan all day long! But I never went back for the second half of Oppenheimer.

PegDope · 23/12/2025 11:31

We went to see it last Sunday and I was concerned about the length but it felt like a normal length film. It was so absorbing.

Pee before you go in and drink in small sips.

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 23/12/2025 11:32

Most adults can manage 3 hours without wetting themselves. If not, that’s probably a GP issue rather than a cinema one. Go before you go in and perhaps skip the large Coke.

This.

Or pretend its part 1 and part 2 (sequel, think Wicked) and stop in middle, then watch next day.

dottiedodah · 23/12/2025 12:02

Totally agree OP! My limit is hour 40 absolute max,Years ago I went to see the Deer hunter with my friend .Nearly 4 hours long! I go for a loo break anyway, even if 1 hr 30 .

QuietLifeNoDrama · 23/12/2025 12:03

Just choose shorter films or watch at home in two parts. I occasionally need to loo during a film but I’ll happily accept that’s my issue not a cinema issue

Katiesaidthat · 23/12/2025 12:04

Watching wicked with my 7 year old. I enjoyed it, but it is way too long. I agree 90 minutes is decent.

Lifeisnotalwaysfair · 23/12/2025 12:06

We're unlikely to go to the cinema to see a long film unless we really really want to see it. So the cinema misses out on us just picking a film we're not sure about, to try out.

Bodhifatva · 23/12/2025 12:09

I personally think they should take as long as they need to take. Some of my favourites are well over 3 hours, some are under 90 minutes, and I enjoy them regardless.

The problem these days is that everything's so formulaic and it's rare to actually find a film worth watching of any length.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/12/2025 12:10

How do you make adaptations of lengthy novels without cutting out huge swathes, though?
I find the inability to focus odd, tbh.

Heyhelga · 23/12/2025 12:11

Some of the greatest films of all time would have been ruined if they were cut to 90 minutes.

While that is true my 18 year old son who started university in September has asked that we go to see it as a family. So given he is not one for family things at the moment I am keen to do as he requests.

Well this is my issue. I don’t mind so much if the length is necessary but so many films these days have unnecessarily long battle scenes that really could have been cut much shorter. It’s all about the director showing off than actually being key to the film.
