Stupid things customers ask on Xmas Eve Eve

Mokel · 23/12/2025 06:52

I have done enough years in supermarkets at Christmas.

I remember one question raised by a few customers when putting out bread.
”do you have any bread dated after 28th”
I said if you go to a supermarket on any other 23rd, the latest date on loaves is 28th. As the bakeries always put the date as X days ahead, regardless of the time of year. I remember seeing one of these customers on Jan 23rd and asked them could they find a date longer than 28th. They couldn’t. Retail worker 1 customer 0.

”Is it possible to collect my turkey on Xmas Day?” Erm no.

No, I don’t.

But people’s lack of planning is stupidity. You can get them on Amazon prime for crying out loud!

But if the conversation goes like this:

"Do you have any crackers?"
"No, sorry, we're all sold out"
"Ah ok, thank you, never mind!"

How is it stupid? If the person then kicks off about how Christmas is ruined because of the lack of crackers/smoked salmon/turkeys etc at 3pm on the 24th then it's different, but it's just a simple question and if the answer is "no" then that's fine

That's unpleasant. Why would people who've not worked in that job know the usual best before dates of bread? It's not like they kicked off because there were no mince pies on Xmas eve or something.

I agree. The OP seems to be one of those little people who thinks you're stupid because you don't know as much about a place as someone who works there.

(I don't know where the word "little" came from, but it seems appropriate so I'm leaving it.)

I know something that is stupid - it’s not having the capacity to think that not everyone starts planning for Christmas in September or has Amazon prime.

If you leave your Christmas planning to the 23rd December that is also stupid!

Pollyanna87 · 23/12/2025 09:20

I really don’t see a problem with a customer asking for something on Christmas Eve? If they get huffy about it when it’s out of stock, that’s the problem.

SchnizelVonKrumm · 23/12/2025 09:13

Plenty of people put crackers on the table on Boxing Day, NYE etc. And even if the answer is "no, sorry we're all sold out" that doesn't make it a stupid question Confused

I agree. Not getting the bread thing either. I can't imagine how that was such a significant interaction for the op that she clocked the customer a month later and thought she'd won some weird contest.

I did my Christmas food shop early yesterday and my Tesco was well stocked with everything, including turkey. The staff were great as well despite being very busy restocking. All smiley and helpful (before I get a hammering, I didn't have the temerity to ask them something, a nice worker saw me struggling to find something and offered help!). I don't think it would be wildly unreasonable to go there on Christmas eve on the chance they may have some crackers.

iwasfineandlight · 23/12/2025 09:12

Asking if they have crackers at 3pm on Christmas Eve, when they’ve been on sale since sodding September, is stupidity.

It's really not. If the shops are open it is not stupid to ask if they stock something that you might be looking for.
People always have last minute things to pick up.
What is a reasonable date for someone to have bought crackers by? October?
Mid Dec?
Sure, it might reflect a level or disorganisation, or that someone has had A LOT going on in their life and only had a few days to get Christmas organised, but that doesn't mean it's a stupid question.

I think it's more stupid to be able to buy Easter Eggs at 3pm on Christmas Eve.

Exactly - the huffiness is the issue not the question. God knows retail workers have to put up with enough genuine shit from customers, why go looking for offence?!

Yup - stupid to be sitting by a dying relatives bedside for 3 weeks and then having to try and scrape yourself together to make your kids' Christmas special.

Things happen. It is not stupid to ask a staff member if they stock something Christmas related if the shop is open.

Dunning Kruger effect very evident on this thread.

So you’ve forgotten 1 item out of around 150 items that you have to purchase for Christmas Day - and that makes you stupid?
tbh I can see why you don’t work in a supermarket - I doubt you’d pass the interview.

bohemianwrapsody · 23/12/2025 09:24

This thread is making retail workers look a lot more stupid than customers. It's never unreasonable to ask where something is or whether something's in stock.

Eggs are the hardest thing to find! They have no natural home and aren’t even in the dairy section often!

@SledgingSlide are eggs dairy 🧐?

Yes? Christmas is the same date every year. You need the same things every year.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 23/12/2025 09:27

I bought bagels with a date of 31/12 yesterday so there are bread-like options with longer dates even if not the loaves of bread. This is the sort of thing someone who works in retail might recommend/ suggest rather than just being smug.

I agree, I had no idea . Why would I ?!

NewCushions · 23/12/2025 09:28

I have to say, I agree that asking these questions isnt weird. Dd and I were in dainsburys on Sunday, early. But they were doing shelf stocking even then - I assume because things were flying off the shelves. I dont think its weord to ask kd there are crackers... it may be that there's big box that just hasnt been unpacked yet.

Crazy would be getting rude and aggressive with staff because what you need isnt in. Or the story from one poster about customers stealing from.eavh others trolleys or fighting over the last tub of cream.

I actually heard someone asking very similar in WH Smith yesterday! "It's got a blue cover and my mum was looking at it in a shop". However she did have the additional info that she thought it was a crime book and it might have had the word Housekeeper in the title .

You've got to be pretty wrapped up in yourself to think this is a sensible question.

Loveapineapplepizzame · 23/12/2025 08:25

LOL I think I was one of those customers lastnight!! In Tesco asking if they still had any outdoor Christmas lights still in…… 😅

Thank the Lord for Amazon!!! And their next day delivery!! Like a Christmas miracle

Perfectly reasonable expectation. It's still two days till Christmas actually starts. If someone wants to decorate only for the actual season of Christmas and wants to buy the things for it a couple of days ahead of time not weeks they should be able to. I hate that nobody is allowed to do things at the actual time of them.

My Parent's owned a newsagent/grocers
Xmas Eve was always bonkers.

  • Do you sell fridges? - erm no - Well youve got a fridge with the cold drinks in so you must sell them !?!
  • I need a food delivery plus papers for tomorrow. - we dont deliver food, plus no papers tomorrow ( 1980s )- I'll complain to your manager- (DM)Im the owner - Ill report you to the police then !?!

Excellent 😂

DeadMemories · 23/12/2025 09:31

Many years ago i worked in Asda. On Christmas Eve a lady picked the last turkey out the freezer then later on when she was walking about /distracted someone stole the turkey out of her trolley.

She was rightly furious but took it out on the staff, demanding we get it back, but we didnt know who stole it and neither did she, we couldnt stop every customer to check the trolley and she couldnt identify that specific turkey.

I did feel sorry for her until she started to scream at my colleagues, my sympathy disappeared.

tapdancingmum · 23/12/2025 09:32

Eggs in my old tesco were at the end of the aisle for home baking but the ones in sainsburys are at the end of the jam aisle. I always forget them in sainsburys as I look at the end of the aisle and think I dont need jam so dont go up it then wander from the bread into the frozen section and miss them completely.
