If a person has fine hair, pretty slow growing also, thins to the end….

Is it possible to actually grow it long and at least little bit thicker, I’m not talking about rapunzel here, just average middle length hair that has some volume.

Are the genes againts me? I got my hair sadly from the mom’s side, her hair is…. Well to not be too mean, if that is my destiny - I will cry.

Is food / vitaminis / products ACTUALLY of any use, I do all this (also I don’t color, blow-dry, use straightener… at all) but my hair doesn’t get any better.
Am I waisting my money?

YABU There is hope, somethings (what?) do actually work
YANBU You can’t fight genes, it’s over, I’m gonna go nearly bald one day (soon)

If your hair is fine and thin and straight then no. You're a bit stuffed if you want long/er hair without help like extensions.

A really good cut and a decent hairdryer will help.

What's your face shape?

Long oval, even worse that Liv Tyler’s face shape.

You are giving your hair a helping hand with diet and supplements and being gentle with it when drying and styling You can change the way it looks by using suitable products, hair extensions etc. Sometimes getting it coloured can make your hair look thicker imo. But if you have very fine hair you’ll always have very fine hair naturally and it’s unlikely you’ll be able to grow it long. Your mum might not have taken such good care of her hair the way you have, so ending up nearly bald isn’t a given.

My hair was the same it never grew below my shoulders for about 15 years it was the same length. I did used to lighten my hair and spent 4 years growing it out. As soon as the colour had completely grown out my hair got longer it’s now waist length so i know the dye was causing my hair to break. I know you say you don’t colour but if you have in the past it may start to get longer once completely grown out.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 22/12/2025 21:06

Biotin might help. It's a vitamin that encourages hair growth and strengthens hair structure and reduces brittleness.

Catza · 22/12/2025 21:08

It's genetic and you are basically wasting your money. I have the same problem. After struggling with my hair throughout my teenage years and my 20s, I bit the bullet and cut is short. Since then I've had many many edgy haircuts and made it my ""thing".
You have to make peace with the fact that you will never have long luscious hair. Just find a good hairdresser and cut it off. If you are anywhere near London, book yourself in as a model for Sassoon advanced training students. They really know their stuff!

Also, don't be afraid to use styling products and learn how to blow dry your hair. I use a lot of texture sprays and finish with a generous dollop of dry shampoo for even more texture.

I realized when I was 15 and the whole youthful world, male and female (it was a long time ago), had long hair and a middle parting, that my fine, unabundant hair looked horrible worn long; I was going to have to wear it much shorter to make the most of it. Fortunately 70's bobs arrived at this point. Please don't agonize about the long hair that won't happen (and even if it does won't hang or style anything like as well as the thick hair that others have); make elegantly styled, edgy short hair your thing.

I’m in the same boat and thinking about going to a walk-in hairdressers for a cut tomorrow. I prefer it below collar bone length but the ends are so light and wispy and just don’t fall nicely. Saw some photos of me from the back and it looks so shite….should I just get a couple of inches lopped off?!

What about a chic French bob?

What about a chic French bob?

Not got the chin for it, I hate seeing photos of me with too short hair… would just below chin length / lightly onto shoulders help lose the straggly look?

AdjustingVideoFrameRate · 22/12/2025 22:38

Always dry your hair upside down (bending over). It does help. Also there are lots of thickening leave-in treatments available, though obviously this is temporary.

I find that after colouring my hair it always feels and looks thicker- someone explained that this is because the colour molecules have to enter the hair shaft to deposit the colour, so each strand is actually thicker.

GardyLou · 22/12/2025 22:49

An Italian bob would suit you, ultra.

Gabbycat245 · 22/12/2025 22:58

I am the same and after many years of dithering, I've got extensions. They cost me a fortune but I am endlessly amazed at the difference in my self-confidence.

smallsilvercloud · 22/12/2025 22:59

As for food yes I noticed a difference to my hair, when I was very slim so was my hair now I’ve gained weight, my hair is fuller. Having enough of a trim makes a difference too, I used to insist I only had a dusting off the ends and it wasn’t as blunt and healthy at the ends, I now have a good inch or two taken off 3-4 times a year and it looks more healthy.
Lightly Oiling the ends at night helps the hair stay in good condition

Yes, but go for a blunt cut. Makes the ends look more "solid" (not the technical term!) and so thicker.

Caerulea · 22/12/2025 23:15

You could try using something like the light Moroccan oil on the lengths & tips? Not the normal one, it will be too heavy.

It helps protect the very delicate ends. As I understand it, it's not that your hair doesn't grow but the ends kinda dissolve(?) & break/snap so you don't feel like you're getting anywhere. Argan & jojoba oils are small enough to particles to actually penetrate the hair shaft rather than just coat it. Personally Moroccan oil (argan) suits my fine 1a hair better than jojoba.

Tink3rbell30 · 22/12/2025 23:36

No I've given up trying and got extensions.

k1233 · 22/12/2025 23:41

I have fine, curly hair. Hairdresser once told me it wouldn't grow past my shoulders. My secret to mid back length hair is hair oil. Proper hair oil, not coconut oil - tried that and it's crap. Try a couple to see how they go. Heavier oils are good for preshampoo. Put on and let soak in a bit. Lighter oils can be sprayed. I look for argan oil or morroccan oil as the ingredients.

I did it! Walked in and said I wanted it all one length so it’d fall properly instead of flopping on my shoulders, and she lopped a good 2 inches off. It looks SO much better, thicker and healthier and not a wispy bit in sight! Excited to wash it and get some products in it tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement.
