How old is your gas boiler?

AIBU for expecting my Worcester combi boiler to last 20 years? Just getting it repaired now (terrible timing financially 😑) and wondering if I should fork out for a new one this summer after 13 years?

Mine is 17 years old, Vaillant. I moved in 6 years ago and I've had it repaired once in that time. Something to do with the pressure and it needed a new part. I was thinking of replacing it soon but after seeing the ages of the boilers on this thread, I want to see how long it will last!

Sidebeforeself · 22/12/2025 19:30

I strongly recommend getting your boiler serviced every year. I pay £120 to a local firm for peace of mind and knowing my guarantee is still valid.

Leavesandthings · 22/12/2025 19:37

My boiler is 6 months old...
It replaced a valiant one that I think was 15 years old. The plumber advised that I could get potentially one or two more years from it maximum by replacing the internal computer (forget what it's called) which was kaput, but that it was on its way out as the casing was eroding (?)

Our valiant one is 24 years old

we have been lucky that it hasn’t had much go wrong…. However it is acting up this winter.

had one repair man out who couldn’t fix it , British Gas came out suggested a new one , in between the two men coming out, it has started working again 🤷‍♂️

however we have had a quote for a new one for 3k from BG , that I think we will go with shortly. The good news about it starting to work again- is that fingers crossed we can save the money for it before hand .

I’d be wary of BG - tried to sell us a bigger boiler than we need and wrongly condemned our repaired boiler to force the deal.

local heating engineer put in a new one and did all the other stuff you have to do to install a new boiler for half what BG quoted.

Olderbutt · 22/12/2025 19:50

Our new boiler ( Worcester Bosch) is precisely 10 hours old! So we're hoping it lasts as long as the Baxi we have just taken out which was 22 years old. We spent approx £1200 on a service/ repair plan in that time. Regular servicing is vital.

singthing · 22/12/2025 19:51

Mine is now old enough to buy booze in the US.

It's the type with a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard, and I live in a hard water area. I need to replace it in the next year or two because I have such low usage I basically fucked it, but otherwise it would have carried on for a lot longer.

Madcats · 22/12/2025 19:51

Our 2008/9 Viessman was looking a bit iffy a few years back, needing a lot of coaxing to fire up and TLC from our friendly Bulgarian plumber, but a new expansion tank and turning down the flow has helped it to canter past 15 years old. It is probably down to the weather, but we are burning less gas by keeping the radiators on a lower temperature most if the day versus trying to blast it for a couple of hours.

Switching to air-source will be major work (nearly all the central heating pipework is 30 years old), so we’re hoping we can wait until installers have figured out how to install the right kit in the right place as standard by the time we need it.

tiredofchristmas · 22/12/2025 19:54

Ours is 34 years old. Not sure which brand. We got a pump replaced this year but that’s the first defect. The engineer said it does get hard getting parts as they age, but old boilers were built to last and new boilers last much less long, 10 years on average.

Until 2 weeks ago, 41 years old.

Decafflatteplease · 22/12/2025 19:59

Ours is 1990! Still going strong 💪 serviced annually.

Sw1989 · 22/12/2025 20:02

I had a Glow Worm combi boiler in my old house that was installed by the previous owner in 2003. Generally something went wrong with it every year I lived there and it got increasingly expensive. I rented the house out between 2021-24 and almost every maintenance request was something boiler related. I replaced it with a new ideal combi in 2022, which was great. Also have an ideal boiler in our current place which will be 10 years old this year and has only needed one repair (a new fan) in our 5 years living here.

My dad was a surveyor until retiring recently and said he'd often visit houses that had boilers that were 30+ years old! They definitely don't make them like they used to.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/12/2025 20:06

Our last 2 houses,Baxi Bermuda boilers behind the gas fire, very simple and 30 years old. Moved,Potterton Flamingo,25 years old, needed a heat exchanger,no longer available. We re fitted the kitchen,it was in the middle of the wall taking up a lot of space,so had a new Worcester Bosch which was installed in the loft (bungalow) it's 12 years old and has had a few new parts.

StCuntyMcCunterson · 22/12/2025 20:07

Mine came with the house when it was built in 1989. We purchased the house in 2015 and before exchange it did break but they fixed it and told us once we had completed that we might want to start saving as they didn’t think it would last much longer. It’s still going strong and doing an outstanding job.

We had our gas meter replaced with a smart one and the engineer was amazed to see one so old but we were doing the right thing in waiting for it to break - no point replacing one that works - but changing the meter may be the end of it. There was a massive leak at the meter point outside and he was about to condemn it but as soon as he set up the meter, it came back to life and was safe with zero leaks. I’m hoping we can get to 40 years old.

we’ve never serviced it.

StCuntyMcCunterson · 22/12/2025 20:08

Obviously it will now break at the next cold snap.

We’ve just replaced a boiler (Potterton) that lasted 33 years. We live in a very hard water area too. It was actually still going strong but we replaced the whole kitchen so thought we’d better get a new boiler too. We’ve now got a Worcester Bosch, which we’re pleased with, but we don’t expect to get 33 years out of that! (As an aside, our fridge-freezer, double oven and hob were also 33 years old, and we don’t expect the same length of life from their replacements either!)

Same here.
Our boiler guy said they were made to last back then. He said don’t replace it until you really need to!

(And avoid BG as they seem to rip people off )

Alpacajigsaw · 22/12/2025 20:10

Well we moved in here in 2008 and haven’t replaced it. Every year when BG come to service it they say that the parts are becoming harder to get…

I was chatting to a plumber in the launderette recently and she told me to hang onto it until it was no longer repairable, as new boilers can also be a pain in the arse. Every winter I am sure I’m on borrowed time with it but so far so good.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/12/2025 20:10

We didn't go for a combi boiler after looking at the reviews,we went for self condensing, combi was cheaper to install, but we were told they go wrong a lot, thus costing more overall..we also kept the emersion heater, and tanks, hood job, because we now have solar.

Boutonnière · 22/12/2025 20:16

6 months old Vaillant, replaced 25 yo Vaillant.

Skippydoodle · 22/12/2025 20:17

Purchased our house 5 years ago, from the service stickers on the boiler, it’s 22 years old. Valiant combi. Will have to replace at some point, but for now, it’s still going strong!

Growlybear83 · 22/12/2025 20:17

Our boiler is 30 years old and still going strong. We had to have it repaired last year and the engineer told us to do whatever was necessary to keep it going because they don’t make them like this any more 😆😆. Our boiler is a potterton.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 22/12/2025 20:17

20 years+. We moved in 18 years ago and the boiler was "fairly new". Potterton Suprima. We replaced the circuit board a few years ago.

MountainofWashing · 22/12/2025 20:21

21 years old

teachermum23 · 22/12/2025 20:23

Just had our boiler replaced for £3.8k (we changed the type of boiler which made the price £500ish more). It was 17 years old. Plumbers told us that 12-15 years is the usual life span of a boiler.

Newyearawaits · 22/12/2025 20:26

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 22/12/2025 17:06

Blimey, was that parts and labour? I just paid £60 for the flow sensor and £177 for labour. Plus vat on top. I thought that was good though. Same day service and engineer had to go 15 miles each way to collect the part.

I think it was worth fixing OP
I moved home earlier this year and my wb boiler in my previous home was 13 years old.

Crwysmam · 22/12/2025 20:27

Had my ch boiler replaced 11 months ago. A brand new Worcester boiler that replaced a 20yr old Worcester boiler. In those 20 years we had it repaired once. The part that fails most commonly is the pump ( I think) because it’s the only moving part. It was replaced around the ten years mark and the replacement last another ten years.
When it packed up again there was also corrosion ( normal after 20yrs) as well. The new boiler should see us out. And with yearly service, around £90-100 it will remain under guarantee for 10 years.
The biggest bonus is that the new one is AA+ rated and I can control it from an app on my phone. Because it’s so much more efficient we’ve seen a significant drop in fuel bills.
They now fit them with industrial grade filters to stop the build up of deposits/debris. It’s also connected via the app to the installer so they receive notification of any fault and indicates when it is due for service. I do love the digital age.
