To wonder why drug/alcohol use is seen as disrespectul?

I was having a conversation with my male coworker who was debating with his new girlfriend about allowing their 17yr almost 18yr old son to have a few drinks. He had no issue with it as many of his son's good friends do it on the weekend but the girlfriend thought it was disrespectful and he shouldn't do it in the house.

I fully understand the concept of "my house my rules" but if we're being honest, the amount of parents or homeowners who would have a problem with someone eating a food they don't like is probably much lower or even nonexistent than someone using drugs or alcohol.

How can the girlfriend be new and them have a 17 year old?

Girasoli · 21/12/2025 21:15

I can see why drugs would be disrespectful- illegal, funding crime etc.

If I had a 17 year old who wanted to have a drink when everyone else was e.g. wine with dinner/a beer at a BBQ, I would find it odder if they weren't allowed a drink in that situation tbh.

I wouldn't let my kids do drugs in my house but I've always gave them bits of alcohol here and there its good to learn safe drinking why I can keep them safe.

She's his step mother and the girlfriend wants to marry my coworker in a few months.

Vaping and cigarettes past 16 im fine with just not illegal drugs

Silverbirchleaf · 21/12/2025 21:41

It wouldn’t bother me if my 17 year old child wanted a drink.

Wouldn’t allow drugs though.

gogomomo2 · 21/12/2025 21:42

Mine could have alcohol with a meal from early teens but drugs and smoking are a no because drugs are illegal and smoking is horrible and should be illegal in my opinion

Sh she’s his new gf, and wants to marry him already? Seems a bit fast (or have I got that wrong?)

BillieWiper · 21/12/2025 21:45

The last paragraph doesn't make sense. You're saying someone eating the wrong food is less or more unpopular than taking drugs? What is 'nonexistent' in this context?

ExamHellDoubled · 21/12/2025 21:45

Well drugs are disrespectful for obvious reasons, for one it’s illegal activity which could bring problems to the family door in terms of police or shady people.

I’d let my teenagers drink in the house, they wouldn’t drink to excess or vape anyway as they are gym bods so I don’t know how I’d feel about it if they chose to. I don’t smoke myself so maybe they would have to go outside if they did but that’s basic courtesy.

She is dad’s new girlfriend. She is not a stepmother by any stretch. She is over-stepping if anything.

This is ridiculous.

billiongulls · 21/12/2025 22:17

I think having a simple rule that you need to be an adult to do drink or drugs at home is pretty reasonable

billiongulls · 21/12/2025 22:19

I have a lot of alcoholics in my family, so don't see alcohol as less harmful than other drugs.
