Safety or otherwise of staying in a single man's spare room Airbnb

Im looking into accommodation for my friend, a single mother and her teenage daughter. One of the very few affordable options is in the house of a single guy (well as far as I can tell from profile). Room is 2 twin beds in its own floor wirh ensure. Reviews including many by women are uniformly excellent. Host described as helpful gracious and respectful. She can't afford her own place and there arent many options.

Sounds Ok if reviews are good: I only discovered after I arrived at one Air BnB that the single host was letting out his bedroom and sleeping on the sofa. I felt a bit concerned but it was fine. If there are two of them I really wouldn't worry.

If he has positive reviews then it will be fine. I've done it a couple of times. Wouldn't think twice if they have good reviews, it's impossible to fake them, or at least in any great quantity, and you can't delete bad ones so if he was in any way unsafe or dodgy it would be flagged.

Sounds fine especially in an ensuite twin room. Also, not all men are bastards.

Yes should be fine with two of them however they should make sure they do a ‘hidden camera’ check in the bedroom and bathroom just to be on the safe side.

If she has a child surely homelessness services are the first port of call. Or refugees at home if she's come from abroad.

My first Airbnb experience was in a single man’s house. It was great, thought I’d have an early night and read a book but ended up chatting all evening and sharing a bottle of wine. As long as the reviews are good I’d definitely recommend it.

I have done this several times times. Never been or felt unsafe (even with one was a weirdo.)

Why?? She can afford to house herself in a shared house. Why would she approach homeless services?!

They could ask for a lock and/or buy one of those wedges to put under the door if it would make them feel more secure?

Pippa12 · 21/12/2025 22:07

You can buy those door stops from Amazon for around £5 for a little added protection at night. All might be fine but I think I’d feel very wary taking my daughter into that situation. I wouldn’t be happy with her being alone in the house either which might make school/work logistics tricky
