I had no idea I was this petty

Yesterday I was pulling into a parking space next to a huge Range Rover when the driver opens his door, gets out, leaves the door open and just stands there. I wait patiently for him to move on but he doesn’t. Then a teen child gets out the back and does the same thing, both can see I’m halfway into the space. Then a woman gets out from the other side and moves round towards her companions, I’m thinking, thank goodness, she’s going to ask them to close their doors and move so I can park. She comes and stands in the space, looks at me like I’m something unpleasant she’s just stepped in, and starts looking at her phone. I will add, this was not a disabled space and all three of them had excellent mobility.
I was picking someone up and there was another space a bit further down, so I moved along to that one. If one of them had something to me—“Sorry, do you mind moving along as we need extra space for our massive car.”—rather than acting like they own the place, I wouldn’t have minded, but the sheer disdain got to me (and the fact that they were teaching this to their child).
AIBU to wish I’d had the time to just wait there and see how long it took them to give up and move, then pettily park as close as possible to their car? Or to wish I’d had the minerals to just lean on my car horn until their ears bled?

In these circumstances I tend to slather my hands on hand cream just before getting out into the cold - this weather wreaks havoc with my skin.

I'm also exceedingly clumsy and quite often I need to steady myself by just briefly popping my hand on the driver's window as I wobble past.

Apologies.

Note to self—buy hand cream to keep in car.

Friend told me similar. He was reversed halfway into a space when driver got out and left his door open and went to the other side of the car.

Similar stand off for awhile then friend finishes pulling his tiny car into space right up to car door, gets out and leaves.

He said it must have taken the driver a while to realise he couldn't shut his door, he was nearly in the shop when he caught up.

Played dumb but did go back.

Could the driver not just get in from passenger side and pull door shut from inside?

Charlenedickens · 21/12/2025 12:55

Gosh you’re very easily intimidated, why can’t you use your words, all you have to do is wind your window down and say excuse me can you move? Instead you’re interpreting looks, deciding what they’d say, all based on what, the fact they had a bigger car than you?

I know a dirty look when I see one. There was no room for interpretation in any of their actions.
But I do agree with you I am too easily intimidated.

I would have given a ‘courtesy tap’ on my horn, counted to 10 and if they hadn’t acknowledged me, started shutting doors etc I would have leaned on the horn , window down and yelled at them to move because I was coming in.
I cannot comprehend selfish entitled idiots like this and I refuse to simply meekly creep off and let them win.
Maybe it’s because I’m highly competitive, maybe it’s because I’m a Loe, maybe it’s because I’m menopausal and refuse to ‘be nice’ to idiots who do not deserve it.
I think the words “Shut your fucking doors before I bash into them” may have left my mouth if I were you.

Joeninety · 21/12/2025 13:09

Console yourself with the massive servicing bills/probably repayment costs they're forced to endure, before RR's terminal breakdown..............Anyway real wealth/class doesn't behave like that.

RidiculousCar · 21/12/2025 12:31

You are right. I was fantasising about being petty.
In reality I was very meek and just let them intimidate me.

Probably for the best. You can tell the families that will just lay into you verbally rather than apologising. You don’t need that!

MyDeftDuck · 21/12/2025 13:15

The woman was probably reserving the place aside of their car for their friends who were travelling to the car park but were several miles away but desperately needed to park alongside as their cars get SOOOOO lonely in a strange car park! 🚗🚗

I’m not understanding much about this thread tbh.

TorroFerney · 21/12/2025 12:56

But odd to be so unaware, i mean the other family. I do think though that sometimes people act like idiots but because they have something on their mind or have just say come from the bedside of a loved one at hospital and just aren't thinking straight. But for all three of them to do it that is odd. I am sure a lot of us have been behind a car parked unreasonably and got irritated and then realised that it's stopped in an odd place as the driver is helping a very elderly or disabled person and then we feel like a real monster!

The type of car seems to have irritated you though op - would a clapped out cheap one have been less irritating!

You are absolutely right! This type of car does irritate me, but only when accompanied by the type of behaviour detailed here. Any car would be irritating if the owner did this.
Maybe I’m being small minded again, but I can’t help but think that the type of car they have is the reason for the behaviour. For example, their car doesn’t fit into parking spaces, so they are entitled to two!

This sort of thoughtless, entitled, inconsiderate behaviour makes my blood boil. Playing music on phones through speakers on public transport, deliberately veering into my path on the pavement, hitting me in the face with your rucksack, etc., etc. Infuriating.

Could the driver not just get in from passenger side and pull door shut from inside?

No because the friend's car was in the way! Obviously an open door takes up a lot more room than a closed one. The friend stopped his car within a distance that, if the big car's door had been closed, there would have been a gap between the two. Because it was open the friend's car was in the space needed for the open door to swing through to close.

BringBackCatsEyes · 21/12/2025 13:28

OP you need to practice asserting yourself.
They were clearly in the wrong and you in the right.

Chocolateandsleep · 21/12/2025 13:29

Start washing your wind screen, depending on where your washer is located, they may have been accidentally splashed

Could the driver not just get in from passenger side and pull door shut from inside?

No, because there was a car in the way?

Imagine a car with the driver side door open and overhanging into the adjacent parking space. Then imagine a second car driving into that parking space. The bonnet (or boot, depending on the orientation) would block the driver from being able to shut the door.

I'm sure someone can post a diagram of necessary.

ProfMummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 21/12/2025 13:29

I really don't get why they would do that though, at some point they'll have to leave it to get to the shop and someone else will come and park next to their precious car! Very odd.

QuantumPanic · 21/12/2025 13:35

I'd have leant on the horn, rolled down the window and politely shouted at them to move. But I'm beyond petty.

That's not petty really, it's just being assertive.

Notmenothere · 21/12/2025 13:45

I’m almost certain you’re describing my odious neighbours. Please think of those of us who have to live alongside mr Range Rover and his charmless wife.

Brefugee · 21/12/2025 13:52

i would have just beeped my horn, rolled down the window and asked if they had all been struck stupid.

Don't need a diagram thanks, was just wondering why the driver didn't try to get into car from the other side (not the side the poster's friend was on obviously) and pull door shut from inside.

Oh yes you do.

I'm with Mrs Hand Cream. Except it would probably be a ketchup sachet from the glove compartment.
