If someone sent you a (nicely) handmade Christmas card, would you think…

YABU: that they couldn’t afford to buy ‘real’ cards?
YANBU: that they just liked making Christmas cards?

Assuming the card has clearly been made by an adult and not a child. Context to follow, just curious. (Regular member, not a journo. 😄)

I would assume they just liked making them. Making your own cards is unlikely to be cheaper than buying a pack at the supermarket.

And a lot more effort has gone into homemade too

I do get a handmade card from someone every year I think it’s lovely.

I would just think they like making christmas cards! I get a few handmade cards most years.

Keep meaning to make some, never get round to it. I’d be pleased.

I love a homemade card, shop bought cards are really cheap. I love all cards, but if I had time would love to make them!

I know how expensive craft supplies are so I definitely wouldn't think they were skint!

I might privately be lightly envious of the amount of free time and/or motivation you have to have to hand make Christmas cards, but I'd love it and be very flattered that someone went to the trouble for me!

My friend makes lovely Christmas and birthday cards. She has done for years now. It's her hobby and she likes choosing different colours / themes for everyone. It's obviously time consuming and clearly not the cheaper option.

I would think they liked crafting. I like hand made cards.

Handmade Christmas cards are lovely. I received one this morning, from a friend whose adult DD is a talented artist. It's a little watercolour of their cat (who I love) next to the Christmas tree. I will definitely keep it once the others come down.

I used to spend ages making cards. Most people appreciated them but I did once hear the "too tight to buy them" comment. That person never received another handmade card.

I love to receive them. I've got a beautiful hand-painted card from a friend this year.

My OH makes, writes and sends our cards every year. Usually 40 - 50 or so. They are all individual.

It absolutely isn't because we can't afford to buy them (and it definitely isn't cheaper). He does it because he enjoys doing it.

I have two hand made cards. I appreciate the effort that has gone into them.

Handmade cards are more expensive! I made my own for years, sadly don’t have the time nowadays.

I make a lot of my cards but only for people I really like and that I know will ‘get’ it. Even though I often use art materials I already own, sometimes recycle ribbons or use dried foliage, it costs more than buying a pack from Card Factory. I would be touched to get a handmade one off somebody, at the very least it means they’ve taken time out to make it!

That they are creative and they like me a lot to handmake it! Handmaking would cost more than buying imo.

This is interesting, I used to make them, not just Christmas cards but all sorts, but even trying to sell them for £1 each I had very little success. They were good (if I say so myself) but most people seem to want a box of 20 boring ones for £1, not a single card. I’ve given up now and concentrate on scrapbooking.
