Would you worry if your 7yo had these swellings?

Long story short...
7yo DS (extremely fit and active) developed a lump on his collarbone in the summer. GP referred for urgent ultrasound. They said it was fluid and not a lymphnode.
A few weeks later, he complains of excruciating pains behind his knee, develops a limp. GP says give him calpol.
Eventually eases off. We take him back a few weeks later as his right lower ribcage is protruding out of nowhere. Sent for another scan. They advise "nothing sinister". I feel like im losing my mind. DS struggling to walk to school, constantly clutching at his rib. Constantly dropping out of all of his sports mid session (his passion).
This week...i notice a large swelling behind his knee, after he's been limping again.
Otherwise well in himself.
Took him to GP today. She gave the once over and announces he now has swollen lymphnodes in his groin, armpit, neck as well as swelling on back of knee. Hopeful that the knee swelling is a cyst. Ice it. Come back in 2 weeks time review him.

AIBU to be freaking out and feeling like this is not being taken seriously? Or do I accept hes had the scans and he is just fine?!

Crikey that’s quite a lump

MotherJessAndKittens · 20/12/2025 00:29

The GP seems not to be concerned but if my DS had all these lymph nodes swellings I would want him checked over in hospital especially if they are causing discomfort. I would ask for a referral - urgent with children and if they won’t then go to paediatric AE. It’s probably nothing more than fighting an infection but shouldn’t be causing him all this pain.

Calendulaaria · 20/12/2025 00:43

Follow your instincts. I think there is more to this than just random swellings. Take him to other doctors and the hospital. Surely something can be done to help you figure out what is happening.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 20/12/2025 00:45

I would be concerned if this were my son. Especially with the pain he is in. I would try again with the GP and then focus on A&E if that’s not successful

JDM625 · 20/12/2025 00:48

Has he had any blood tests yet?

GKG1 · 20/12/2025 00:49

I understand why you are worried. Has it all been the same GP? Start by asking for a second opinion if not?

This.

I would actually take him up to A&E for the lump behind his knee and the clutching of the ribs. At the very least call 111 and take their advice.

He needs a blood test to rule out the most urgent scenarios which could include clots, which can form anywhere in the body but often start in the calves and can travel.

Uncommon in youngsters, but I got my first blood clot around 11, after a sports injury. I was almost 30 when they finally found out I had a blood disorder. I had a lot of GPs fobbing me off.

Once they've ruled out the urgent things, then they may decide it needs referring and they can refer you without you needing to go back to the GP for the referral, or they may agree with the GPs assessment but he will have had bloods done at the hospital.

Needs bloods and referral Paediafrics Urgent at this stage

blankcanvas3 · 20/12/2025 01:04

He needs blood tests ASAP

Keep pushing. My DS had a lump on his lower jaw 3 years ago, and pain in his ankles and shins. We were dismissed several times before eventually one GP at the practice got him seen immediately in hospital. 48 hours later he had had a x-ray, MRI, and a biopsy.
It took a long time to diagnose but turns out he has a chronic bone disorder (CRMO) and had several affected places in his body.

Please keep pushing.

As someone who works in a pharmacy I have to say how incompetent some doctors are. They refer pretty much everything to us, when people get to us we have to tell them to go back to the doctor as there’s nothing we can do for them. You have every right to feel the way you feel! I would take him to a&e or a minor injuries department if you have one at your hospital and explain to them that this has been an ongoing problem since the summer and don’t give up until you’re satisfied with the help you’re getting

mellongoose · 20/12/2025 02:38

Trust your gut. I wouldn’t be happy with this. Everything rushes through your mind, which doesn’t help.

As pp says push for a second opinion.
