Petrol fumes in home - safe or not safe?!

DS (young adult) has been using petrol powered tools and brought them back into the house to store. I’m not sure what he’s done but the petrol fumes are 🤢. Apparently I’m really unreasonable for saying the tools should be put outside until they stop stinking - their tanks already been emptied. I think it’s a health & fire hazard (I sure as hell won’t be lighting a fire!). DH & DS are saying I’m a stupid worrying woman and should shut up. I’m really upset at how they’ve spoken to me but that’s another matter… TLDR - should I be concerned about the fume stink or am I being silly??

I've never known anyone to store petrol powered tools in a house.

Where have they been stored up until now.

I dont think you arw being unreasonable ref the fumes, unless you like the smell. I wouldnt be concerned about lighting a fire unless they were in the same room.

If he's emptied the tanks ill assume theres vapour spills on outside of equipment. Do you not have a garage/shed to put them in?Or black bag them and put them outside to protect from rain. Also has he changed yet?

They are twats. And they are also wrong. Inhaling fumes is bad for you, and they do pose a fire risk.

We have two chainsaws in our downstairs lobby at the moment and we have a fire lit.

I’ll admit it’s not their permanent home and I haven’t noticed any smell either.

Have you got children in the house?

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/12/2025 19:19

Ugh no our two stroke petrol strimmer and brush cutters STINK and they are not allowed in the house and I am not best pleased when DP leaves them in the car either tbh. In the shed with them, thats what sheds are for.

They're not a fire risk, well unless you were planning on standing them around an open fire, but the smell is horrible and gives me a headache.

No, we keep them in the shed.

Thanks all - I don’t mind being unreasonable, I just don’t like being made to feel like a twat for voicing my concerns! I’ll stop worrying. For those wondering why they’re inside - if you leave the tools in a shed round here they’ll get nicked! We have a designated store room for tools/bikes etc inside because of this. Lawn mower is in outhouse but in a tractor safe lock sunk into concrete. Tractor is next to house and very old and slow - they wouldn’t get far in it😅. He has changed and has gone for a run (to get away from me prob!).

Petrol fumes aren’t good to breathe in, and I don’t know anyone who’d keep them in the house when they’ve been recently used and the fumes haven’t dissipated. I say this as someone who has and uses them both at home and work.

In case your son is having trouble believing you, here’s the AA link where they explicitly state the health risks.
