Cried at work

I cried at work today and I just wanted the ground to swallow me up. I have been off work for 5 weeks with low iron, i had been feeling so exhausted in work before I went off and felt that I wasn't up to the job.
I had my return to work with my manager and I told her that I didn't think I could do the job anymore I feel so tired. I ended up crying. I feel so useless I know other members of the team have low iron but they cope at work.
Dreading going back in on Monday 😢

Ah big hug OP, no one will judge you. You are not well. Take it easy this weekend if you can. Hopefully doctors can sort your iron levels and remember we are near half way through winter. Better times are coming

How did your manager react?

How did your manager react?

She didn't say much, think she thought I was crazy just had 5 weeks off but moaning I'm tired and can't do my job

Aww I would also have wanted the ground to swallow me up. I'm a bit more philosophical about crying now - it is a natural human reaction.

Have you been treated for your low iron?

Do you have any other symptoms apart from tiredness?

thisgirlloveschristmas25 · 19/12/2025 19:44

I wouldn't worry as a manager I have had many staff crying about things that are going on in their life, you are human and not feeling well its a natural reaction.

paddleboardingmum · 19/12/2025 19:46

Rachel Reeves even did it in the full public eye if it's any consolation. Try not to worry about it, feel better soon OP

Princesspollyyy · 19/12/2025 19:51

Dont worry, there’s not one single job ive had where I haven’t cried, and ive had loads of jobs.

Sounds like your manager could do with being a bit more supportive and treating you like a human rather than a number.

HippopotamusForChristmas · 19/12/2025 19:52

I cried at work yesterday OP in front of a colleague. She's cried in front of three other people at work. One of those three people have also cried in front of other people. And so on. I mean I'm not saying it should be a regular thing but sometimes you just can't hold things in.

In my 22 years of working I reckon I could probably count a good couple of dozen people I've seen crying at work.

We're human x

Except Rachel Reeves is in charge of the country's finances. Her crying on live national television spooked investors. I don't think it's a reasonable comparison to the OP.

By the way, @user9029920 have you considered vitamin B12 injections? My MIL has issues with tiredness and it turned out she has absorption issues, so she gets quarterly B12 jabs.

Everexpanding · 19/12/2025 20:00

I have had employees cry when talking about illness and other things going on in their lives. It has never made me think any less of them. Everyone cries, sometimes things just get too much for all of us.
you’ll feel better again soon don’t give it another thought

Presto95 · 19/12/2025 20:03

Low Vitamin D levels (which a lot of people have) can make tiredness worse. My consultant suggested 4000mu daily dose and the sprays seem to be the best

Sassylovesbooks · 19/12/2025 20:07

I had a panic attack on the way to work last year (nothing to do with work). I tried so hard to calm myself down, but it didn't work, I ended up bawling my eyes out. I work in a school, so the Pastoral Care team came to help me. I was so embarrassed. However, the silver lining was the fact, it made me realise I had to seek professional help, which Pastoral Care signposted me to. Do you think OP, you should be back at work? What help have you had and is it working? You can't carry on like this, feeling exhausted.

Low iron causes a myriad of symptoms ALL of which are actual physical/physiological ie you dont control them.

Your body is not getting enough oxygen going round to the cells which means they dont work properly, no natter how much positive thinking you try!!
It also affects uour brain, your emotions and it is NOT about lack of control/choosing to be over emotional.

Are uou on any treatment? It can take a while to level itself back ip., oh and dont compare yourself yo others who have 'low iron', its not a competition and responses/effects will differ in different people.
