To ask can you be in a medically induced coma for high or low blood sugar

As a non diabetic was given information that a friend of a friend had been in a coma due to iissues with their blood sugar they aren’t diabetic it was due to taking too many tablets. Is this possible or did the mean due to low blood perssjre? I know secondhand information isn’t always great.

people may need intubating and ventilating ('medically induced coma' is a non- medical term that doesn't really mean very much) for all sorts of reasons, including low or high blood sugars and blood pressure problems.

Both very low or very high blood sugars csn be life threatening and needs immediate treatment
It sounds like you only have very limited information about what's happened.

Hoardasurass · 18/12/2025 16:23

Both too much and too little sugar can put you in a diabetic coma and kill you its very serious

ColdAsAWitches · 18/12/2025 16:49

It doesn't have to be medically -induced. You can go into a diabetic coma.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/12/2025 16:53

You're right, secondhand information isn't always great.

ChocHotolate · 18/12/2025 16:56

Low blood sugar is usually corrected rapidly with a swift improvement usually seen. However if injuries or other illnesses were sustained whilst the sugar was low (falling over, long time lying on floor) then this can of course complicate things.
High blood sugar usually takes longer to correct especially if it is associated with the blood becoming too acidic - this will often lead to ITU admission and sedation (medical coma).

Serencwtch · 18/12/2025 17:00

Yes high or low blood sugar can both result in unconsciousness (which is what 'a coma' is)

You don't have to be diabetic to have high or low blood sugar.

Yes definitely an overdose of medication can cause unconsciousness and high or low blood sugar.

It's impossible to know what information you are looking for when you don't have the details.

The person who needs to know needs to ask the medical team involved to explain it more clearly. With such little info you are very unlikely to get accurate answers on here

ots not a coma if someone isn’t unconscious for long though is it?

How long are you talking? You can’t afford to be vague when asking questions like this.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/12/2025 22:14

Why are you asking, do you think someone is lying, what is it that's really bothering you.

Clonakilla · 18/12/2025 22:55

I’ve intubated people for high blood sugar (with acidosis). It’s actually a really dangerous intubation.

Surprised anyone’s been intubated just for low blood sugar. That can of
course make you unconscious but it should be identified and treated before anyone needs to intubate you.

SilverPink · 19/12/2025 09:34

You’re not the same poster who thought her friend was lying when she passed out and had to be carried out by a fireman are you? I vaguely remember she’d taken too much medication…

Posting style is very similar 🤔

I don’t think she’s lying I’m just curious what the medical issue was as she’s still in recovery I don’t want to ask her.

It wouldn’t be medically induced, it would just be a diabetic coma due to spiked blood sugar levels. It’s a thing. You can, in fact, google it.

If you’re not close enough to ask her, this is literally none of your business.

What do you mean still in recovery

Thefsm · 19/12/2025 11:47

I took a massive overdose on Sunday and they put me in a medically induced coma for three days because they said the meds had put my brain at zero activity so I wouldn’t even breathe for myself and had to be intubated. So yes it’s possible.

Boohoolol · 19/12/2025 11:47

stop being so bloody nosy into someone else’s business

Or she could be newly diagnosed?
My son was in DKA and his Blood sugars were unreadable on diagnosis ,he was in intensive care for three weeks.

Stop being so nosy and wait until she's ready to talk about it, rather than speculating on a forum full of strangers armed with one-twentieth of the information needed.
