I work part time as a care assistant in a residential home, we have a new mananger who is unreasonable when it comes to demanding we attend compulsory training or staff meeting,, often getting 5 or less days notice, I'm a carer for a relative also with lots of appointments etc, should they not give more notice and where do I stand if I refuse to attend as short notice

Are you expected to attend when these fall outside your contracted hours? Is it in your contract that you must attend and be paid if training or staff meetings are held when you are not scheduled to work?

ACAS is usually a good source of advice for this kind of thing.

It's the lack of notice that is the issue I have a disabled husband and lots of appointments as a result, the lack of notice is a real issue they have called us in two days before Xmas I have decided to tell them I won't be attending due to a appointment as its short notice I will see if I get told off🤣🤣

Are you on a zero hours contract? Or being called in outside of contracted working hours?

If so, it’s fine to say you can’t make it.

What does your contract say?

Is your manager aware of your situation? I would contact them first and explain. I had to pull aside someone I managed recently for doing similar to the staff he managed. He was single and childfree and just assumed that everyone else was as flexible as he was.

Contracted hours worked outside these hours but paid, yet short notice
