Last day in work. Retiring at just under 55, why can’t I stop crying?

Is it maybe tears of joy?

Upthenorth · 18/12/2025 00:15

I think it must be a big adjustment OP.

The routine of work and seeing the same faces, the familiarity.

Have you made plans for your retirement?

Yes lots of plans. You are right it’s adjustment and leaving the best job, conditions, pay, team, boss, just the best of everything really

Can I ask why you decided to retire?

Can afford to that’s all

I’ve not retired but I left a position I’d grown to hate and I cried all the way home. I was damn good at my job I knew it like the back of my hand and was a bit of a subject matter expert. For me it was the unknown I’d miss the routine, the familiarity, the camaraderie and some colleagues. I left just as Covid lockdown was implemented so there was a lot of unknown going on. I just let myself cry while laughing with my then DH.
think about all the things you’ve got lined up. You’ll soon get used to your new normal.
Hope you have a long, happy retirement

Thank you that’s such a lovely thing to say. I’ve told myself no more tears from tomorrow!
I love love love my job. I wish it was shit so I’d be happy to leave but it’s not. Time to live life to the full starting tomorrow!

Well, you're coming from a position where many others here would feel jealousy, envy or both.

It seems your job hits highs few others experience in multiples.

Kudos to you !!

I hope today is a better day OP! And you start to enjoy it.

I would be crying with relief. I’m nearly 59. I have to say though if I had stopped at 55 it would not have been the right decision. It’s too early to stop altogether and the brain can atrophy.

My brain hasn’t atrophied since retiring at 55!! 😂😂😂 I practically cartwheeled out the door from mine! Life is wonderful, even better now my husband has retired. Enjoy your retirement OP, you’re going to love it!!!

Because you're doing the wrong thing?

Alright - no need to rub it in 😆

happy retirement 🙂

change can often be very emotional, whether good or bad. When I left my last-but-one job, for a huge and much wanted promotion, I sobbed through my last day and leaving do. I’d loved my job, but was also very much looking forward to the next step.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/12/2025 09:14

I've just 'retired' (also have a wfh job) from my retail job at 65. I have to say that I might have dissolved into tears too it was only the sheer pragmatism of the team on my last night (which was very busy), treating it as just another day that kept me going. I also loved my job, but I was feeling very wobbly about the entire change of routine no more work was going to involve.

Good luck to you in your new life!
