People saying they’ve never had flu?

Cumbrianlassie · 17/12/2025 18:00

I find this incredibly strange. I’ve had flu several times in my life and I’m 36, I mean the ‘proper’ flu - body aches, fever, skin pain, headache, cough, no appetite, fatigue for several weeks and weakness.

I had it in January, as did my DS and DP.
Havent had this new strain yet but feels inevitable!

Are some people just immune?

I’m 70 and I’ve never had flu. I’ve had bastard Covid three times in as many years, and I had a chest infection that was horrible about ten years ago, but thankfully have avoided the flu.

I’ve probably jinxed myself now.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/12/2025 13:59

I'm late 50s and have never knowingly had flu. A few months ago, I got chatting to a doctor while staying in a hotel and he said that I probably had bad flu but had been asymptomatic.

How can you have "bad flu" but be asymptomatic? Surely the symptoms are what makes something bad?

Earlgrey26 · 18/12/2025 14:21

I have never had flu.. I thought I had till I witnessed my husband and daughter having flu. Then I realised I really hadn't .

sorry ‘bad’ was a typo. It should have read ‘had”.

Or you just had is less severely 😂

Suzyloo · 18/12/2025 14:33

I'm 58 next week and I've never had it (with symptoms, anyway). I didn't get the vaccine until 2020 when the government asked everyone to have it to keep the hospitals free for Covid patients. I've had the vaccine every year since then, though, and I'll continue to get it just in case I'm not a miracle of science 😜. I've never had Covid either (I've had all the vaccines for that, though).

bonesandbooth2025 · 18/12/2025 14:37

Once. I had norovirus for 3 days and woke up thinking I didn’t feel sick but why was I so hot
in bed for 2 weeks and the GP did a home visit!

Starryskiestonight · 18/12/2025 14:41

37 and never had the flu. Husband has and it’s the most ill I’ve ever seen him, properly couldn’t get out of bed for 5 days. Only started having the flu jab through work 2/3 years ago so think I’ve just been lucky

VikaOlson · 17/12/2025 22:48

Unless you test every time you have a headache, sore throat, aches, temperature etc how can you tell the difference between flu and a cold?

@VikaOlson As per previous attachment.

DinoLil · 18/12/2025 15:23

I've had flu once when I was about 32. I was wallpapering my youngest's bedroom, suddenly started feeling awful, managed to finish the last drop and was in bed for ten days. Absolutely dreadful.

I've had covid once. Nowhere near as bad as the flu. Bed for about three days.

RainbowBagels · 18/12/2025 15:38

I've only had 'proper' flu once. I ended up in hospital as I didn't know what it was and ended up in hospital. I was alone in the house and couldn't stop shivering, so I was wearing about 5 layers of clothes and was under tons of blankets. My then BF came home from work and called the ambulance. They immediately stripped all my clothes off and the next thing I remember I woke up in hospital. I get reimbursed on flu jabs now through my work, but I always paid to get one since then.

That's what's scary about it I think. Colds come on over days. Flu just comes out of nowhere and knocks you on your arse.

I'm in my late 50s and have never had flu.

I hardly ever get ill eg I can go a few years without needing time off work. I'm not sure if that's down to a good immune system or just luck.

Or it could be 30+ years of teaching. Maybe mixing with loads of ill children has given me a bit of resistance.

Edited

This is me 100%! Existing 5 days per week in a hot bed of germs definitely builds the immunity! No flu here either.

SoulSearchBeHonest · 18/12/2025 16:36

Luxio · 17/12/2025 18:03

Do you not have the flu jab. Several times in your life at your age seems excessive.

This.

I have the flu jab each year and haven't had flu for many years. Try getting the flu jab.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/12/2025 17:04

Ive had it twice in 45 years

Beatrees · 18/12/2025 17:21

Definitely never had flu except swine flu about 10 years ago.

In my late forties.

Never had a flu jab.

Oldraver · 18/12/2025 18:39

The nearest I have come to flu is when I had COVID at 56. I don't generally get colds either but currently have my first one in probably 20 years

CrowsInMyGarden · 18/12/2025 20:13

63 and never had flu. Had nasty virus few times that have lasted 2-3 days but that’s prob not flu. Had flu jab past 6 years since working for NHS but not before

Superhansrantowindsor · 18/12/2025 20:16

I’m nearly 50 and I’ve only had it twice.
I know a lot of people who say they have the flu when it’s a heavy cold.

FeelingFineNow · 18/12/2025 20:42

I'm 64, I've never had flu. I can't actually remember the last time I had even a minor cold.
I don't have flu jabs but I absolutely swear by taking turmeric capsules every day.

SlowCookerDay · 18/12/2025 21:33

Some people do just have better natural immunity to viruses. DS has only been off school maybe a week in his life (yr 11 now) and that was covid when he wasn’t allowed out! I honestly can’t recall him taking other days off. I was the same.

I WFH mostly now and haven’t taken any sick days in almost 4 years in this role. I get a bit of a cold now and then and they’d it. I think I was last properly ill with either flu or covid almost 6 years ago.

enjoyinglifenowretired · 18/12/2025 21:46

60+ and have never had it. Always had flu jab at work and privately afterwards.
DH and 3 adult DC’s have never had it either.

ladygindiva · 18/12/2025 21:52

I've only had it once, aged about 30. At my physical peak, funnily enough ( I was very fit and healthy at the time) . That was 20 years ago, never had it since. I never get the vaccine.

Acommonreader · 18/12/2025 22:28

Maybe some are just lucky. I’ve never had flu, I get a cold annually for about 2 days. Had diarrhoea twice and a headache a couple of times with a hangover, never with illness. . I’m 48.
