I need urgent help for a 4.5 yr old boy present

I have had the year from hell. My sister in law is an actual nightmare (I have cancer and she decided to tell our family at my mother in laws 60th dinner that it was a good thing that I’m
now infertile because wed be useless parents, because im a dr and DH is a judge so we’d never be around) but I love my brother and his children.

I thought I’d chosen an amazing toy for my 4.5 yr old nephew (the toot toot garage with annoying songs and all that jazz) but it’s arrived and it’s so clear it’s for a kid closer to age to our other niece.

So now she is getting that, our friend with a 2 year old is getting the fine motor busy board I had originally planned for niece and now I have nothing for my lovely 4.5 yr old nephew. No that’s a lie he’s got some sensory bath stuff because what kid doesn’t love bath potions?? However I need a gift that he will love.

Im usually really good at presents but this year Christmas has snuck up on me and I’m not going to lie I really really struggled to separate the fact that I’m buying gifts for the child of someone who is a giant twat, but they’re also my favourite brother’s kids so I had got over it. I actually deliberately bought the toot toot garage because it is so loud and irritating I thought it’d be a hit with the kid so she can’t get rid of it but annoy the fuck out of her too… yes I’m a giant bitch

Magnetic tiles. Honestly, children of that age I work with are almost hypnotised by them. And you can get massive sets which will look good wrapped up under the tree!

Also, hope your treatment going well.

Hercisback1 · 17/12/2025 06:22

My first thought was magnet tiles too!

Santasbigredbobblehat · 17/12/2025 06:23

So funny, my first thought was magnatiles.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 17/12/2025 06:23

The best gift i ever bought was quercetti tubations. I have never seen a toy more played with. Perfect for that age too.

Bobloblawww · 17/12/2025 06:40

A good quality remote control car.

Mollywasasinger · 17/12/2025 06:43

Drums. He will love them. She won’t. Win win!

PippaPug · 17/12/2025 06:45

A trumpet

The website wicked uncle is really good and you can filter by age.

RhaenysRocks · 17/12/2025 06:52

I just handed down a Mario Scalextrix set that my teen loved at that age. It's gone to a colleague with a 4 year old who says he'll love it.

My 5 year old boy loves:
magnetic tiles
stomp rocket
remote control stunt car (ticks the noisy and obnoxious boxes)
marble run
fart ninjas (if you really want revenge on your SiL)

YessicaHaircut · 17/12/2025 07:12

A Lego set (4+), my DS has an interactive Super Mario one with an electronic Mario figure which he absolutely loves. Or a marble run.

Edictfromno10 · 17/12/2025 07:15

Another vote for magnatiles.

NewYearNewNameWhoKnew · 17/12/2025 07:16

Stomp rocket is brilliant

Hot wheels - if you want to be an amazing aunt & annoy the parents get something massive. A hot wheels mega garage would be a hit and take up loads of space in their living room.

Agree magnetic tiles are also fun although I used them more than my kid.

SunnySideDeepDown · 17/12/2025 07:17

Anything hot wheels! Or remote control cars always go down well with mine.

Pranksters · 17/12/2025 08:21

Mine loved Thomas and Paw Patrol at that age.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 17/12/2025 08:26

Has he got a Tonie box or a Yoto player? (You use them to listen to stories, music and other content.) The Tonie box figures that go on top are adorable. Agree Magnatiles could be a good shout (maybe with a cheap drum kit on the side 😬).

Lmnop22 · 17/12/2025 08:28

When my son was 4 he loved anything remote controlled - he had a remote controlled T Rex for example that roared very loudly and had light up eyes.

He also loved anything hot wheels, his Paw Patrol pup tower and Pup pad, simple board games, science kits (also very annoying for parents as an added bonus!) and dressing up costumes.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 17/12/2025 08:29

PS You’re not a giant bitch - she sounds like a piece of work. You could also get a massive set of percussion instruments…or my DS’s favourite present last year at the same age was a Minions Fart Blaster. Just saying….he had a wonderful time “farting” in everyone’s ears 😂

Wishing you a better year Flowers

BertieBotts · 17/12/2025 08:37

Hot wheels is what my 4.5yo is playing with. There are all manner of ludicrous sets with various sharks/snakes/pizzas/car wash/loop the loop etc in some combination. He goes mad for it, you can't go wrong.

Yes! My son got one of these and loved it but it was the most tasteless and annoying present ever. And it’s practically impossible to open the battery compartment and takes about 10 AAs. Excellent suggestion!
