To call in sick even though I could probably do my job?

I’ve got one of these winter bugs going around. Sniffly nose, sore throat, I’m going hot then cold (I don’t think I have a fever though as I very rarely get them), head feels like it’s full of cotton wool, knackered. It’s not the flu or anything like that, just a winter bug.

I can do my job. But very selfishly I want a day in the warm resting so that I can get rid of this before Christmas. AIBU to play it up a little in the morning and call in?

Do it
you’ll pass bugs on to colleagues

Part of the reason I’m feeling this way is because I’ve been picking up the slack for months

This is also what I’m worried about. Just before Christmas and I’m feeling like shit, I don’t want to pass it on.

Take the day off! Feel better.

bellalou1234 · 16/12/2025 17:20

Ah I’d a no issues phoning in.

The vitriol in your response is vile.

OP you take the time. Your employer would get rid of you without a second thought so rest and recover for Christmas.

This is also unnecessarily aggressive when I’ve said I’m feeling unwell, not just wanting a day off for the sake of it.

This is such a common question on Mumsnet and Lord knows why.

It's your job, you know how you feel and what the score is, not us 🤷‍♂️

DraftLovely · 16/12/2025 17:23

If you feel a bit under the weather then yes you can take the day off, it's totally reasonable to do that and considerate not to pass it on if you have to work with other people around you. My only worry with things like this is that you take this time off when you could still work and then get hit with some illnesses where you really can't work, like the norovirus that's going around, and that triggers your work's sickness warnings and you start getting in trouble.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/12/2025 17:26

I personally wouldn't go sick if I could do my job.

However, the school I work at is very hot on staff sickness and if people have 3 episodes in a year, they get a formal warning.

It's also a lot of bother if I am not in because I need to set cover for my classes and then pick up when I get back.

If you are able to work, I'd dose up on cold remedies and try to get through it.

I hope you feel better soon!

I’m going to have a root around in the cupboards when I get home and find some night nurse and see if that doesn’t help

I think the thing is, if it wasn’t Christmas in a week id push through. But I really don’t want to be poorly over Christmas!

If I were your colleague I'd probably be happier to work doubly hard to cover you tomorrow than have your bug!

I'm not sure how staying off tomorrow is going to stop you being sick over Christmas?

Because I can sleep in and stay in the warm, and give my body time to recover.

lol no, and I’m not really faking. I’ve taken sick days before (just not at this job)

I’ve phoned in sick for less!
I wouldn’t give it a second thought, plus you’d be doing your colleagues a favour keeping away. You might feel dramatically better after a day of rest

As I’ve said. It’s one of those where it’s borderline.

I called in sick on Monday with something similar. I am feeling about 75% better so intend to go back on Thursday. I haven’t been off sick in years and I do not want to infect colleagues some of which who are immunocompromised. Rest up and keep warm ❤️

Is one day enough to recover?
