Sadly I can’t have my heating on 24.7!!!! And my dad is elderly and sits in his chair all day.
Whats the cheapest heater to run? Someone said an oil filled radiator? Someone else said halogen? Thankyou I have it on 21 degrees and he’s still cold so need a heater by him? Thanks

heat the person, not the room - cheaper and everyone can suit themselves

CabernetAndCocoMelon · 15/12/2025 20:13

I have an electric blanket it’s amazing

Sunshineandswimming · 15/12/2025 20:39

I really feel the cold (hypothyroidism) and years ago I tried using fleece blankets on my bed instead of (cold) sheets & it's a real game changer. It's lovely & snuggly to get into at night too. I then have a normal quilt on top. If it's really cold, I add an extra folded fleece blanket over my feet area. Toasty!

A heated blanket.

This one has lasted me two years. It’s very warm. So much so I often turn it down (I am always cold). It saves me having the heating up high when I am working.

I have that one. I agree with you, It's amazing.

Unless your house is huge why don't you use some of your dad's money to keep the home warm. It is very unlikely that his income is less than £1,000 a month and this seems a good use for it. If his income less than £1,000 look into benefits for him.

HelloPuppyPie · 15/12/2025 21:03

Definitely a heated throw they are so cosy

HellsBalls · 15/12/2025 21:12

As been said by others, get some merino wool thermals, then wool jumper and a down gilet or long sleeve down jacket. You can get down pants as well, no idea on longevity mind. Long thick wool socks. Definitely a hat.

FuzzyWolf · 15/12/2025 21:14

Heated over blanket and a heated foot warmer.

Crummles1 · 15/12/2025 21:18

Yy to thermals as a number of people have said - tops and leggings, a hat - preferably with earflaps

But also

A sheepskin to sit on, on the chair or sofa
A footstool - feet off the ground
A duvet on top of his mattress/underneath him, or again a sheepskin

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 15/12/2025 21:19

Heated throw
I bought one for my Dad & it's the best present I ever bought him.

Crummles1 · 15/12/2025 21:37

A cat or a dog!

dollyblue01 · 15/12/2025 21:40

Heated blanket definitely it’s a game changer

ultracynic · 15/12/2025 21:59

Another vote for a heated blanket, amazing invention. But if you want a heater I bought this one for the attic bedroom last week, seems to heat up very quickly and warms it up nicely despite being compact. It’s great for 30 quid!

Thin real wool layers. It has to be real wool. Look in charity shops for merino wool jumpers etc. Layer with thermals. So many modern jumpers look warm but synthetic fabrics don’t hold the heat. It makes a big difference.

Snowangles · 15/12/2025 22:30

Definatly heated throw but if you can afford a goose down duvet I recommend soak and sleep v v light like a cloud

InSpainTheRain · 15/12/2025 22:31

Heated blanket or a warm hot water bottle on his lap.

Happyjoe · 15/12/2025 23:44

Never had a heated blanket but they do sound nice. We have one little room that sticks out from the house and the normal heating is not meaty enough and the room prone to damp as well as being uncomfy. One wall is icy to touch. So we use an oil-filled radiator on a timer to cover the hours at night when the central heating is off. Works a dream.

RetirementTimes · 16/12/2025 00:35

Heated blanket is the way to go. Don’t have to heat the whole house. I have a dreamland one - can set the timer to 1/3/9 hrs and has 6 temperature settings. I find 3 toasty. So impressed that I got them as presents for in-laws as they don’t want the heating on all the time and would struggle getting thermals on and off.

caringcarer · 16/12/2025 01:10

Plug in heated pad for behind back and heated blanket. I love mine.

suburberphobe · 16/12/2025 01:12

Blankets - the more the merrier.

Not electric ones, obviously.

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 16/12/2025 01:19

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 16/12/2025 01:19

Long sleeve top and long johns under clothes with thick socks

ClareBlue · 16/12/2025 02:04

Oh I have that one it’s lush
I got a few of them for family for Xmas presents a few years ago and they all love them
it heats up so quickly and it’s so warm

also OP make sure he is wearing socks
I wear thick fluffy socks with grips on them
but a decent heated blanket is a must

rarely have my GCH on it’s set at 18 so kicks in a bit at night but I don’t notice as my heated blanket keeps me absolutely boiling

and a hot water bottle but he may struggle to make sure it’s locked tightly and not leak
