Is having one different coloured wall is old fashioned?

My living room is white .. when I moved in I just got every room painted white with the intention of changing it as I decided over time what to go for.

I was thinking of changing the fireplace wall to a much darker colour and leaving the rest of the room white? But is that really dated now?

I have a feature wall around a real fire. This is because it does get very grubby and needs regular repainting. But its tonal colours which blend well and I boringly stick to this.

My gs and my dd have both used strong colours in Victorian terraces. My dd says if a room is dark, its dark and embrace it. Hers is a forest green. It looks great with period features and industrial type furniture. The front room is light and is dark blue. Just go for what suits your house and you.

Hello, my sister-in-law is an interior designer. Yes, it is very dated. A bit like the trend a few years ago to paint a wall dark blue on navy blue. That now looks dated.

Something I would tempt you away from is the current trend of colour washing. Where you paint the ceiling the same colour. Not because there’s anything wrong with it, but in five or 10 years when it drives you mad you’ll have to pay someone to paint the whole ceiling white & cut in all the lines where the wall meets the ceiling.

Can’t believe there are people who really worry if their house looks ‘dated’ or old fashioned. Everything dates, and interior designers are always pushing for the next trend. Why? To get those tills ringing.

The only question is do you like it? Trust your own aesthetic judgement.

(However I am very glad grey decor is finally over. So depressing)

In some of our rooms, mainly bedrooms we have feature walls with wall paper, I then tend to colour match paint in the background colour or go a few shades lighter for the other walls. I little texture and print but our rooms aren't grand enough to pull off wallpaper on 4 walls. I don't care if it's on trend or not. I like colour, pattern and texture so that's what I have.
To be honest if you go too on trend it dates quickly. I think colour drenching will be the new greige

Quite a few rooms in our house are odd shapes, or are two/three rooms knocked into one....I quite like using feature walls for "zoning". For me, this usually means more than one wall in a different colour. In our kitchen (mainly creamy beige walls) there are two perpendicular walls in the end section in a deep french turquoise. In the living room most of the walls are off-white, but three walls around the staircase are a greeny-blue. In our bedroom we have two perpendicular walls which go around the dressing table area papered in a pale silvery teal, but the rest are plain/painted.

It's quite difficult to explain, but it just "feels" right to have a mixture, particularly when one colour is a bit too strong/rich to go everywhere. It breaks up some of our large rooms, cocoons some areas, allows a splash of colour I can pick out with accessories etc. I find colour-drenching a bit claustrophobic, to be honest, and I like the lift of a white ceiling.

@Littlebuddhplease please please post some pictures! I love strong colours!
OP I’d lean into the dark side, in a north facing room. As PP said you can’t brighten up a north facing room with pale paint, IMO it just looks washed out.
I have a north facing sitting room which I have painted dark green (F&B Green Smoke if you’re interested). I’ve also painted the hall dark navy below the dado rail (Mylands Bond Street).
I mean what do I know, I’m not a designer and I don’t have to please anyone but myself!
WRT feature walls, I have sort of done this in the kids rooms. I let them choose a colour when we moved in, painted over the magnolia with white and chose one wall for the kids choice. DS2 wanted a very strong blue green colour so I painted the wall around the window in that colour. Adds interest but doesn’t overwhelm.
Anyway just do what you like, it’s your house! If you really don’t like it you can bust out the magnolia 😁

Why does it matter?

Our living room is painted two colours - a nice, bright bold green and (MN hated) grey to lighten it up a bit. I couldn't give a fuck if some designer has decided it's "dated".

Yes! This is what we've done and I love it.

I have just the chimney breast painted. I am happy with it, so don't care if it is dated. When i moved in there was an avocado bathroom and apparently they are becoming trendy again, although I struggle o believe it.

Dreadfully old fashioned, the new look is to paint three walls and leave just one!

Doesn’t that then become a feature wall?

Yeah, I can’t work out if that was a joke or not.

RunMeOver · 15/12/2025 21:19

What is colour drenching?

Painting everything the same colour.

Like an institution.
