How can anyone find hard mattresses comfortable?!

Catt1sh · 15/12/2025 11:07

I have had a few trips away recently, over the past 4 months and found that every single bed was so hard! No bounce or sponginess to it at all, it’s like sleeping on a slab of concrete.

It makes my back ache so much, I ended up sleeping on top of the duvet with my dressing gown or blanket over me to add some extra cushioning. I don’t understand how anyone can sleep on mattresses like these? My partners dad says he prefers hard mattresses… if you are one of these people, how?! Does it genuinely feel comfy to you? I don’t see how it could. You might as well sleep on the floor (okay, I’m exaggerating now, but still)

I suffer with sciatica and constant lower back and hip pain. Soft mattresses make it feel so much worse. Have you never heard that when you have a bad back it's better to sleep on a harder surface. I've slept on the floor many times before getting my new rock hard mattress

Yes I’ve heard that it’s better to sleep on a hard mattress, and even though it is more supportive, that’s not the same as being comfortable. What I’m asking is, do you genuinely get into bed and think “all lovely, all comfy and cozy” because I can’t imagine how you can actually feel comfortable, regardless of whether your back feels better the next day

I prefer a very hard bed. I lie on stomach. Harder the better. Need the support. I don’t mind if some give as long as supportive. I can’t sleep if no support.

FurryGiraffe · 15/12/2025 17:21

I have a spinal condition. If I lie down on a soft mattress, I can feel my spine protesting almost immediately. It’s as though with a soft mattress, my spine is instantly tense because it’s so unsupportive, so it’s impossible to feel comfortable. With a firm mattress, my spine feels supported so I’m properly relaxed and can feel comfortable.

Oh I find it comfortable as fuck😁 to me I find soft mattresses truly uncomfortable. Mine is an extra firm memory foam one so though it's hard, it's got the cushioning of the foam so it truly is comfy as hell😊

We bought a simba hybrid, went and tried it out loved it. It’s horrendous you sink into it, I suffer with back pain and sciatica and it is god awful. Dh loves it but I can barely move in the morning and wake up multiple times in the night stiff and feel like I’ve been beaten up in my sleep. I’m going to have to find something to put on my side of the bed because I’m exhausted 😴

I hate very firm mattresses, to the extent that when I went on holiday recently I took a vacuum-packed foam topper to make the inevitable hard hotel mattress bearable.

As an hour-glass side sleeper I found that very firm mattresses offered no support to my waist area so would end up with pain in the mornings. Now I have a medium support Hypnos mattress- the old fashioned kind that you can turn- and it's so much better.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/12/2025 18:06

I've been known to abandon some saggy mattresses and sleep on the floor instead.
I roll around a lot, so sinking into a mattress is restrictive. If I'm sharing with DH, he's heavier and I roll down to him and wake up stuck on him in a sweaty mess. I love him, but I don't want to be plastered on to him Grin

Hell is filled with large, squishy sofas too!

Mine is classed has an hard memory foam mattress... its thick and gorgeous.. bought from Jysk sale 3 years ago.. reduced from £800 to £400.. l have osteoarthritis in both hips.. pelvis and neck
... Fibromyalgia.. cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy and stenosis... so it's the most comfortable mattress for me... in hotels and villas.. if the mattress is too soft l can't get comfy and wake up aching all over.

MrsPositivity1 · 15/12/2025 21:29

I love a mattress that I just sink into. My hips and shoulders ache if I sleep on a firm one

ultracynic · 15/12/2025 21:34

If I sleep on a soft mattress I’m in agony the next morning, feels like my spine is locked. Can’t stand memory foam either. I think I don’t turn over as much in a soft bed so I get cricks all over.

Hard beds all the way!

Hollyhobbi · 15/12/2025 21:34

I love hard mattresses. I have a bulging disc, sciatica and severe osteoporosis at the level where I have the bulging disc. I detest soft mattresses and have on occasion slept on a floor rather than make my back worse by sleeping on one!

CoodleMoodle · 15/12/2025 21:38

PIL's bed is the hardest thing in the world, like sitting on a brick wall. Late DM's bed was the opposite: it was like a cloud. Couldn't deal with that either!

DH and I have a mattress right in the middle, thankfully we agreed on that one.

FancyCatSlave · 15/12/2025 21:43

Oh I like a hard mattress, I don’t like it to move under me. I can sleep soundly on a floor
though too. Or anywhere actually.

An expert at a bed shop told me that my size, shape and sleeping position was best suited to Medium and my ex was meant to suit a Hard. So we bought a zip and link superking with both and after just a couple of nights had to
swap them over. He now has the softest bed I have ever seen and I would rather have the sofa.

GhislaineDeFeligondeRose · 15/12/2025 21:46

I like pocket sprung that mould to your shape and support it. My dds love theirs too. They are medium firm

Mudflaps · 15/12/2025 21:47

I have fibromyalgia (many decades of it, shitty tbh) and I need a supportive but soft mattress, if its too hard I will not sleep because of pain. I side sleep and love the feeling of softness when I roll over. Husband likes a solid hard mattress so we bought a king sized for hard mattress for our room and a soft double for the 'spare/my' room, I also use a latex pillow so I have the softness I need, I have a camping latex pillow for travelling. A hotel with a hard mattress means me requesting extra duvets to put under me for cushioning.

dollyblue01 · 15/12/2025 21:48

I have a soft spring mattress my partner a rock hard one , so happy to get in my own bed after a few nights at his , feels amazing

Changename12 · 15/12/2025 21:50

I think a lot of people are confusing soft mattresses with old saggy ones. You can have a soft but supportive mattress. We have Vi spring mattresses. They recommend soft mattresses for up to 11stone. Medium mattresses for 11 to 16 stone and Hard mattresses for 16 to 20 stones. I am under 11 stones but decided to go for a medium one. I had to get a mattress topper for it because it was too hard.
I hate it when I go on holiday and they have really hard mattresses because some of their guests might be overweight. I get back and shoulder pain. It is not supportive to my body as some bits of my body like the small of my back don’t touch the mattress.

Yes, when I lay on my back I like it to support the curve of my back by moulding to it.

I’m under 11 stone but anything apart from Firm gives me awfully sore joints. Ex was 17 stone and only slept well on Medium soft. I know I’m not meant to like it but I do.

My Firm mattress was pricey (about £9k) but it is super comfortable. It’s one of the reasons I don’t enjoy going away much, my bed is too lovely.

RaininSummer · 15/12/2025 22:27

Soft mattresses give me back ache as there is no support.

Yes, I definitely do feel ‘all comfy and cosy’ when I get into my bed with its hard mattress. It’s just personal preference I guess.
