Do you have a cheque book?

DVLEh · 14/12/2025 09:06

I haven't had one since 2020.

I asked 4 friends. None of them have a cheque book either.

We're all 40s-60s and haven't needed one for years. 2 friends' bank accounts could request a cheque book, but the other 3 of us couldn't.

I need to send a cheque or postal order to the DVLA. So it's a national government service asking.

And on another note, the man in the PO yesterday didn't know what a postal order was, so couldn't issue me one.

YABU - change your bank account to one which automatically issues a cheque book

YANBU - the DVLA needs to join the 21st century

I have one, but I haven't used it for years.

ChessieFL · 14/12/2025 09:09

I do have one, but have only written one cheque in the last 5 years.

JDM625 · 14/12/2025 09:09

Yes, I still have a cheque book, but I did have to rummage around in my filing cabinet to find it and haven't used it for about 10yrs. I'm late 40's and needed one to pay for land registry paperwork.

Wonderknicks · 14/12/2025 09:11

I don't either & my kids (mid to late 20s) have never had one. I had to send the DWP some money & they said "cheque preferred". They didn't get one, they got a bank transfer & I fail to see how a cheque would have been better for them!

cinquanta · 14/12/2025 09:11

I have one but only use it two or three times a year.

Therandomtrekker1 · 14/12/2025 09:12

I have one use it yearly to pay for field rent. In my Late 40’s

FestiveBauble · 14/12/2025 09:12

My bank has never issued me a cheque book for any of my accounts (I’m early 30s). I’ve used cheques in a previous place of employment, but never had to write one in my personal life!

KilliMonjaro · 14/12/2025 09:13

No. Because it’s not the 1950’s.

Boomer55 · 14/12/2025 09:13

I have one but only generally use one cheque a year. NatWest will send one upon request.

Pensioner but fine with online banking. 👍

vanillalattes · 14/12/2025 09:14

No. I haven’t written a cheque since I paid rent as a student about 15 years ago!

somanychristmaslights · 14/12/2025 09:14

Why does the DVLA need one? Are you sure that’s not a scam? When I replaced my driving license I just paid by card.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 14/12/2025 09:15

I have one, kept at the bottom of a drawer. I might have to write one cheque every five years or so - I think the last one was something to do with DVLA?

GladyouAskedactually · 14/12/2025 09:15

I use one every single week to pay for school dinners. The School don't do online payment and I don't like sending my primary school kids in with cash (also never have the correct change). Other than that, never. Maybe a wedding gift. Again, cash cash go astray.

Ruggerchick · 14/12/2025 09:15

No, haven’t used one for years.

TwinklyNight · 14/12/2025 09:16

Yes, but barely use it.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 14/12/2025 09:17

I don't think so. I suppose there might be an old one lurking somewhere in my filing cabinet! I was recently in France (running a school residential trip) and the teachers there said that it's still really common to use cheques. I asked because I saw their students all handing in cheques to pay for a trip.

Just because it's outside your experience, it doesn't make it a scam.

In theory, somewhere?

I wouldn’t be able to whack it out and write a check though.

Dh and I stayed at a b&b a few years ago. We booked it and turned up ready to pay at check in. They only accepted cash or cheques. 🥴

Now this was a very rural b&b probably 20 miles from the nearest town. There was a dodgy cash point at a petrol station that charged like £6 somewhere before there. But anyway, not somewhere with a bank or cash machine anywhere nearby. And who goes away for the night and brings their bloody cheque book?!

We ended up having to drive some ridiculous distance to get money out to pay. They wouldn’t take a bank transfer because they ‘didn’t trust it.’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 14/12/2025 09:18

I have a chequebook and had to find it last year so that I could send a cheque on behalf of DD to the DVLA, I think prior to that it had not been used for a decade and I only have it as a legacy because I have had that account for so long. My newer accounts don’t have cheque books

When my DD told me that they only way to pay the DVLA was by cheque I didn’t believe her, she was 25 and has never had a bank account with a chequebook or had a clue what a postal order was.

I have no idea why the DVLA is stuck in the 20th century it is an embarrassment to the government

reenon · 14/12/2025 09:18

The DVLA are the only organisation I know that still wants cheques.

To renew our trade plates we have to send a cheque. We have a cheque book that gets used once a year for this purpose.

Ireolu · 14/12/2025 09:18

DH was recently paid by cheque. We were convinced it would bounce. It didn't. I hadn't seen one for several years before this one.

Grinch11 · 14/12/2025 09:18

Not had one for 15/20 years. I can’t remember the last time I wrote or received a cheque.

This makes perfect sense, but I'm surprised at the school. Parentpay all the way!

It’s not a scam, there are a couple of things that you can only do by post with a cheque still. I think in my case it was changing an address.

ShesTheAlbatross · 14/12/2025 09:20

Oh yes I had to pay the DVLA for something recently and had to get a postal order. I don’t understand why I couldn’t pay online like I did for my new passport - why must it be a bloody cheque or postal order??

Very odd that the guy in your post office didn’t know what it was though!
