Or do fake trees always look crap?

So I treated myself to a Balsam Hill tree and I’m honestly shocked at how shit it looks.

All my previous trees weren’t great but I thought buying this brand would be better … how mistaken I was.

so sparse and ugly. If I ever bother to decorate I’ll just get a real tree from now one.

I must be one of the minority who don’t like the look of real Christmas trees compared to fake ones when they’re all decorated.

I always think real trees look quite sparse and can't bring myself to put a dead tree in my house.

Have you done enough fluffing? It can take ages and you have to pull the branches out, there will be smaller pieces attached to each branch you need to fluff out up and down to ensure coverage.

They don’t have to be dead!!

Mine is in a pot- I usually get 3ish years out of one tree (repot it) but after that find they give up the ghost as I don’t have anywhere to plant them (paved yard).

I think this works out okay. I use the trunks of the dead trees on my allotment, and cut the branches small to use as mulch.

Theslummymummy · 14/12/2025 18:19

Always

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 14/12/2025 18:22

Aww OP that is shit. I agree for balsalm hill prices you expect prestige trees! You can really see the middle on yours, all the fluffing in the world won’t make that as bushy as the advertised photo! They’ve either sent you the wrong tree or there quality is shit! Hoping the first. For what it’s worth I love your baubles! They’re classic and classy and I love the colours.

TheYetty · 14/12/2025 18:22

They look crap because they are crap.

I don't like fake trees at all. We always have a real one. It's not just the look, it's the smell I like too!

So....I have a really good fake tree from a local garden centre, but I missed the smell of a real tree. Every year I now pick some lovely smelling fir branches from a fir tree in our garden and jam them between the fake fir branches. Voila - a Christmas tree I don't have to water and a room that smells of pine!

ChubbyPuffling · 14/12/2025 18:31

I dont really care if we have real or fake, but won't have one in a pot again. Came down one morning to 40 teeny slugs making silver trails over our living room carpet... no thanks.
Currently have a fake tree as no space for a real one, bought a narrow fake which looks festive enough with all our stuff on it.

Windysummer · 14/12/2025 18:31

Another White Company fake tree over here. We have had it for 5 years now and it is still going strong. We absolutely love it .

MetalliCat89 · 14/12/2025 18:33

It's the uniformity. Triggers the uncanny Valley lol.

I hate my fake one even though I chose it, I love the "imperfections" of a real one.

moormum · 14/12/2025 18:34

We have had. Balsam Hill for a few years and love it. You do need to open out the branches to get the full effect.

NunsOnTheRum · 14/12/2025 18:37

We have a Balsam Hill tree. You have to put on the gloves they provide and fluff out the branches, it takes quite a while but with a bit of effort it will look like the one in the photo. Love ours

Brefugee · 14/12/2025 18:37

another alergic one here, so i can't have a real one.

Also Jesus didn't say "kill trees for Christmas" so i use the same fake one that we've had for years and years and years.

For a few years i was so sick of all the fluffing and faffing we just wrapped it in pretty much a whole roll of bing bags (the strong black ones) and put it in the garage, brought it out again in December, unwrapped it, plugged it in and that was that. (all my decorations are glass tho)

FightNight · 14/12/2025 18:40

The photo you have posted looks like the branches are still closed up. By fluffing we mean pulling all the branches apart one by one on each stem. It takes a few hours to do properly.

shanononon · 14/12/2025 18:40

Yes, crap for sure. Tacky.

TallMam · 14/12/2025 18:43

Fake trees can go in the bin, same as fake grass...what's the fun in a plastic piece of cr@p pretending to be a tree

claireymrsd · 14/12/2025 18:43

I have the same tree. This is post fluffing

Gardener82 · 14/12/2025 18:46

Doesn’t look like the same tree op. I got a new artificial tree this year from an online Store called Christmas Tree world. It was £150 and is 7ft, I love it.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 14/12/2025 18:47

Op. Yours looks like it needs fluffing out. They’re not perfect straight out of the box, you need to plump them up a bit.

I’ve had the same fake tree from wilkinsons for the last 10 years or so. I genuinely looks great. I prefer its shape to many real tress I’ve seen, which can be very hit or miss.

just give yours a good sort out and it’ll be fine

shuddacuddadidnt · 14/12/2025 18:53

My BH tree is ten years old and I love it. Fluffing is essential but such a faff that I waited for their sale and got 50% off the wheeled bag that my 7' tree sits in permanently. After Christmas I just zip it up, wheel it into the garage and it stays there till the next Christmas.
My tree looks just like the BH photo@.

OP, for ideas, there are 'rules' to tree decorating eg how many baubles/lights for each foot of height.

We have a Balsam Hill tree that we paid around £100 for and it looks exactly like yours. It's OK as it just sits on top of a Kallax, but it isn't impressive. You really do get what you pay for with them.

Emeraldforest · 14/12/2025 18:54

I don't like real ones, I can't bear the thought of cutting down a beautiful tree. I have had a real one with roots a few times, then planted it in the garden.Ive rescued some of those mini trees and planted them too.
I had a beautiful big fake tree but we have a little rescue houserabbit whose enclosure takes up about a third of the lounge so now have a smaller tree. We have a pink one up this year but also have a yellow and a green..they get loaned around the family! No question of any of them going to landfill for a good many years, if you look after them they last indefinitely.
We also have a big houseplant sometimes called an Australian Christmas tree, that lives outside in the summer but it's indoors for the winter currently with a few baubles on.

ScartlettSole · 14/12/2025 18:54

I think Christmas trees in general look shite, real or fake 😂 all this fake are green triangles snobbery is silly, they all look utter naff so get whichever variety you want!!

Im sorry you are disappointed with the tree you bought, it really doesnt look like the ad. Maybe check the item number to make sure its the same? If it is, its not the worst by far, just get more baubles (asdas are half price the now) and pad it out a bit.

Zov · 14/12/2025 18:59

I must be one of the minority who don’t like the look of real Christmas trees compared to fake ones when they’re all decorated.

You're not in a minority, most people prefer fake to real Christmas trees. Look at the poll result!

ToadRage · 14/12/2025 19:07

Does my fake tree look crap? Always had real as a child but my husband doesn't want the hassle.

Or do fake trees always look crap?
CraftandGlamour · 14/12/2025 19:11

I find plastic trees, much like plastic flowers, too unnatural and a bit depressing so, no, not a fan myself.
