Shoppers coming Boxing Day then complaining about it’s dreadful to have shops open

In a former job working for a supermarket which I worked 12 years and worked about a third of those BDs. We had no end of customers who came in and said things such as:
. “It’s dreadful that (chain) is open today. Aldi have common sense by closing today”
. “It’s is a disgrace that you are open today”
. “Oh what a shame you are working Boxing Day”

Well, it’s idiots like those who say things above are causing the shops to
stay open on BD. If you think it’s dreadful for shops opening on Boxing Day, a simple piece of advice - STAY AWAY!

Then Aldi, Lidl, Home Bargains and B&M are closed on Boxing Day. On BD, I visit a relative and walk past Aldi there and back. Always see at least three cars driving into the car park. Does the empty car park give the clue away that they are closed??

People need to stay away from shops on Boxing Day.

people never seem to extend that same sentiment to hospitality workers who are often working Christmas Day too.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 13/12/2025 15:28

I personally find it unnecessary and don’t go to any shops/bars or restaurants on Boxing Day.

bronnibro · 13/12/2025 16:22

I miss that, now im older it's not the same but I do remember as teenager the niceeness it was to get a bit of cash or a gift card even if small like worth a fiver of tenner, things different but not necessarily always best , I agree we can definitely close for a few days a year without a mekrdown

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/12/2025 16:32

They're sympathetic because staff at working, not sorry the shop is open.
I'd assume that they're making conversation.

CandyCaneKisses · 13/12/2025 16:33

I can never understand why anyone needs to go shopping on Boxing Day. People can’t stay home.

IDontHateRainbows · 13/12/2025 16:34

People need to do whatever they want to do, if retailers want to open on boxing day and thems the terms and conditions when you join, dont complain if youre rota'd on....go work for Aldi, John lewis or other non boxing day stores.

Indeed. For some reason retail workers have this hallowed status whereby their family time matters but other workers don't matter - healthcare, AA patrols, hospitality and leisure, etc

THIS. The same could be said for the workers couldn't it? - stay away from firms that open on Boxing Day if you despise working on it so much! 🤷‍♀️

We often go to the pub on boxing day (mainly to escape the family) but always tip the bar staff . I'm glad they are there.

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/12/2025 16:39

B&M are open on boxing day. A fact I was extremely thankful for a couple of years back when someone passed their lurgy on to me on Christmas day and I woke up feeling like absolute shite the next day and had to do a mercy dash for strepsils and paracetamol. The only circumstances in which I'd go shopping on boxing day.

It used to be for massive sales (though I never did.

Now it’s online and starts on Christmas Day itself. Doesn’t take account of the people behind the scenes. Wonder whether people would accept if they went to the main shopping websitesites in the UK and saw - we are shut online and in person Christmas and Boxing Day to minimise the number of employees that have to work today including behind the scenes.

Unfortunately wouldn’t work as even if Amazon Uk did the American would probably not, neither would those where it isn’t part of their main holiday such as India

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/12/2025 16:43

I think most retail shoppers are usually young adults and teenagers who are spending their Christmas money.
Blame the shops encouraging it with big sale discounts., not the shoppers.

MigGirl · 13/12/2025 16:43

I agree, this why I don't go shopping on boxing day. Corner shops have always been open for anything that's a real emergency, but why when so many seem to spend the week before Christmas shopping can they not cope with the shops being shut for 2 days.

Some shops start their sales before Christmas.

Easy enough for orders to be taken by a system and the human element ( packing/ despatching) wait until the next day so not really the same. You may just need a skeleton IT team in case of system problems.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 13/12/2025 16:53

When I was younger the sales started in January although shops were open between Xmas and then.
I genuinely don't get why people need to go food shopping on Boxing day given most people have already bought enough to feed an army for a week

BettysRoasties · 13/12/2025 16:53

They are in the shop because it’s open.

They can feel for you having to work while also appreciating the store being open to grab some bits.

I feel sorry for staff working Boxing Day, I feel sorry for the chefs and waitresses working Christmas Day. It must suck for doctors and nurses working Christmas Day.

But if I need batteries Boxing Day for a gift my child got and b&m is open I’ll go to B&m and get batteries. Take it up with your boss.

How much of the extra 20 pints of milk and 8 loaves of bread purchased ‘just in case’ (of what) is actually consumed?
