Hair cut and colour now exceeds what I earn in a day. Absolutely fed up.

Obviously everything is going up and up. Just went to book hairdressers- I don’t go often , maybe every four months since I went grey ( used to box dye it for 30 years before that). Its my one bit of self care.
Cost has jumped from £120 to over £170 since I last had it done in September. For full head highlights for chin length bobbed hair plus wash and rough blow dry.
It’s not that I don’t believe its worth that price and I am not knocking my hairdresser, its not about that. But I am a senior NHS nurse with 30 years experience. My job has taken a lot from me and my family. I take home £150 a day. The hair appt is 2.5 hours.
I just cannot justify the expense for myself any more.

I am more concerned that you only take home £150 a day after being in a job for 30 years and are now at senior level.

This is the real reality of the NHS. Junior staff ( who could have as much experience as I do!) will take home significantly less.

Its off the topic of this thread but do people really feel comfortable with staff who are in highly responsible jobs earning £110/£120/£130 a day. If you or your loved ones end up in A&E, child in NICU/ you or your loved ones fighting for life in intensive care. In those situations it will be a nurse who notices if you are deteriorating and will ensure appropriate steps are taken to address this.

I guess higher taxes are needed to ensure you’re paid what you should be.

I don’t disagree the cost of living is high, but try a different hair dresser. I have root colour, baylage and tone for £120 with a cut and blow. You obviously use an expensive salon, shop around.
Also you’ve likely had more of a pay increase an a better paid pension than most, full sick pay etc. you are better off than most - add all that on to your take home as a total package.
I spend over £600 a year on professional fees, over £250 a month on travel to and from, don’t get any home working and the bare minimum in pension.
Stop looking at the net day rate and think about your total package. How much paid sick leave or maternity etc have you taken? How much more per year does the nhs pay in above the bare minimum? All adds up.
if you don’t like it and want more in your net daily then look at private sector.
A business has had exponential costs costs lately, thy don’t operate at a loss!!

You need to shop around. I go to a High St near me, it’s not fancy - there’s no Costa or artisan bakery but I found a little hairdresser with lovely staff and I pay about £85 for half head highlights, cut and blow dry. I’m in the south east.

Some of the salons that look like they just do old ladies’ shampoo and sets have hairdressers there who are really professional and have been working in the business for years.

I’m interested in how you like your highlights. Many hairdressers do them quite chunky, whereas I like them very fine and blended so that the re growth is not noticeable.

Lol that's an insane cost. I spend £70 on a full head colour, cut and blow dry. And that feels pricey to me.

Find a cheaper salon, or look at beauty colleges where you can often get a much cheaper cut/colour by a student with heavy supervision. I wouldn't be fuelling them charging that much by paying it. They're cutting and colouring hair, not performing CPR.

Its not insane if that's the going rate for the location.
Cheaper salons do exist but they aren't always good.

I think posters aren't aware of the difference in the cost of living in various parts of the UK. Hairdressers and houses!
