Hello
I'm going to be in Gloucester Town centre forma work meeting soon, timing means I'll be there for 2 hours by myself.
I want a nice coffee shop/almond croissant type place for breakfast. I've never been before, if you know Gloucester is there anywhere nice you can recommend?

The town centre is pretty absolutely grim (IMO), but it is only a short walk to the Docks area where there are lots of places for a coffee - sorry, I don't have a specific recommendation, but definitely head in that direction.

Icepop79 · 11/12/2025 19:24

Agree with the above - head to the food court in the docks. Lots of little cafes. There’s a very nice Swedish one that does posh coffee and delicious (and enormous) pastries. Not sure of the name, I’m afraid.

Icepop79 · 11/12/2025 19:27

It’s called the Scandinavian Coffee Pod

imabitjealousandembarassed · 11/12/2025 19:28

Oh dear its not sounding good. Not sure I can go out to the docks area. Hmm might end up in the m and s cafe I guess

Have a look around the cathedral. Grab a costa or similar.

OilyRoundTheCogs · 11/12/2025 19:30

@imabitjealousandembarassed

It's probably a 15 minute walk at the most (depending on your starting point, obviously)

compostking · 11/12/2025 19:31

Gloucester is grim. Marks and Spencer’s in the centre has a cafe, go there, shut your eyes and pray it’ll be over soon.

Monvelo · 11/12/2025 19:33

Gloucester has always had a bad rep but we still like it for a change. I don't know many cafes unfortunately . But if you head down Westgate Street and follow signs to the cathedral that's quite a cute area. The cathedral is lovely. My kids like to go there and to the Beatrix potter museum and the hippy shop Pilgrims which hasn't changed since I was teenage. There are some cafes around there. Nice architecture.

Back in the day we used to rate cafe renee!

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 11/12/2025 19:33

It is pretty grim yes, the cathedral is lovely and The New Inn very historic and 'interesting'!

imabitjealousandembarassed · 11/12/2025 19:35

OK I'll stay in m and s and pray 🤣

The food dock in Gloucester is a 7 minute walk from M&S (and actually I think it’s a bit quicker but that’s what Google maps says). The city centre is a bit run down but it’s no worse then many centres in the UK. The Docks are nice and really close to the city centre- or the little narrow roads by the Cathedral.

Monvelo · 11/12/2025 19:36

It's no worse than loads of other places op, not grim imo. Certainly worth a nosy if you're there for work anyway.

DareDevil223 · 11/12/2025 19:40

Gloucester really isn't THAT bad people! Mister's Café in Westgate Street is really nice. The Comfy Pew in College Street. There are plenty of Coffee 1, Costa, Starbucks, Caffe Nero etc.

If you can get to the Docks (it's only a short walk down Southgate Street from the centre) then Caffe Corretto is lovely.

Honestly, there are plenty of nice places for a good coffee and a pastry.

DierdreDaphne · 11/12/2025 19:47

I think there's a cafe actually in (under?) the cathedral. There used to be anyway. It's a very fine building, and the cathedral close is charming too. There's also a funny little cafe just near the entrance to the cathedral precinct that doesn't necessarily have the finest brews - but they're very friendly and jolly in there iirc.

DierdreDaphne · 11/12/2025 19:48

Ha yes the Comfy Pew, that's it's name. But if you're headed to the docks there's a really nice small Italian place on the open square just north of the shopping mall bit. They do cracking sandwiches in there too.

DierdreDaphne · 11/12/2025 19:50

Cafe Corretto on Orchard square I think.

imabitjealousandembarassed · 11/12/2025 19:50

Definitely not doing docks but will check comfy pew amd misters

The food court part of the docks is really close to the town centre - it’s just down the steps from Kimbrose way. Don’t confuse it with the quays which is a bit further out. Its only a few minutes further on from Costa and Nero and worth the extra walk, imo.

JustMerelyHere · 11/12/2025 23:10

Double

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 11/12/2025 23:12

The docks (Gloucester quays) is literally a ten minute walk from the cathedral/town centre. Its really nice there, not really out of town at all although I appreciate it sounds it.

Fasterthan40 · 12/12/2025 14:23

Where did you go in the end? I am watching teen row on the canal in the rain tomorrow. Surrounded by industrial estates. Maybe I’ll aim for the docksz

jellybe · 12/12/2025 14:28

Hope you made it to the cathedral they normal decorate it beautifully for Christmas. Especially the cloisters.

afromom · 12/12/2025 14:54

@Fasterthan40there is a Costa at the Log Pond, which is close to where they row/the rowing club. The docks (Gloucester Quays is the name on signs) is not far in the other direction and has loads of places.

@imabitjealousandembarassedGloucester isn’t that bad. The Comfy Pew at the Cathedral is lovely, the Coffee No 1 on Northgate Street is also pretty good for pastries. Both very central.

Fasterthan40 · 12/12/2025 15:26

Oh that’ s really helpful, thank you @afromom

imabitjealousandembarassed · 13/12/2025 12:59

I ended up in Misters which was very cute. Lovely details and decorations. Then later I was in Boswells in the shopping centre which was also nice. I didn't find gloucester bad at all. There's some very nice little shops and a great antiques centre
