We used to at one time, get the free local paper delivered. Everyone did
It was put through your letterbox.

Now and for a while they are only available to pick up yourself from a supermarket.

Its only a few supermarkets and the stock is limited. You can easily miss out.

I hear its too save money. I guess the advertising revenge isn't there.

Is it the same everywhere now. Limited supply of free papers now?

Well we have the internet now.
If you want to see what's on a the local cinema, look up houses for sale or sell/buy stuff - you just go online.

Oh right. Sorry 🙂
I doubt anyone does.
My mum (Oxfordshire town) gets a freebie magazine about 4 times a year that's printed by the council for local information. She also gets a advertising magazine a few times a year that is literally just adverts and maybe a half page written piece about the joys of summer or something by a local Vicar. You don't get news in it.
Where I live (London) we randomly get a similar council one for the borough (and sometimes the one for next borough over as we are on the border).
Again it's mostly council information.
I don't think my mother in law (Northamptonshire) gets anything.

No. We get one of those awful free local magazines which seems to be mainly adverts and 'articles' (which are also basically adverts) for local independent schools and businesses.Waste of trees!

We get a glossy monthly magazine- in a posh bit of london though so I guess the cash is there to keep it going.

It actually has some pretty decent guest interviews in it so I do usually flick through it.

The days of local free papers are long gone I think. I used to deliver them when I was a kid. Worst job ever !

We get them supplied on the buses here, not through the door, but we get a village directory once a month.

Oh yes.... there's the Metro newspaper of course.
Available on every bus and railway station in London (and I believe regional variations in other parts of the UK).
Doesn't get delivered to houses though.

Thats not a local paper though is it? Are you talking about the Metro.

Free papers have largely disappeared now because they were not able to make enough money from advertising to cover print and distribution costs.

I started my journalistic career at one 25 years ago and they were absolutely thriving in those days. We had five reporters!

You can still get local paid-for papers and they’re the best way to support local journalism.

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/12/2025 23:03

We have the monthly village magazine.
