AIBU? Worried about this flu for Christmas

I’m so paranoid that my daughters going to get this ‘Mutant strain of flu’ that is all over the news adds on facebook. She’s 5 and she’s in school, she has had the flu vaccination.

I am more worried as I’ve got a little 18 month old that was born prematurely with respiratory distress, but was signed off lung issues at 6 weeks old.

im so worried they’re both going to get it.. 😢 I suffer with health anxiety.

they both had flu last year so I’m triggered by it. My son was blue lighted to a&e but he never got admitted.

I have been doing supply in a Secondary school. One of the young teachers caught flu early October and is still off.
I have decided not to do supply again unti the flu peaks.

Bought a box of masks in Boots today. And saw someone wearing a mask in the street for the first time since Covid. The lady who served me in Boots said I had bought the last pack and that people had been coming in all day asking for them. In a way I suppose it's a good thing – if people start wearing masks it will slow the spread.

Yanbu. After all the covid conspiracy theories coming true, I'm inclined to think there's a link between this and Starmer's operation Pegasus event in November. Something just doesn't sit right. Maybe that's just me being paranoid but after all the lies the government bodies spouted last time, I don't trust a word they say. There was a pre planned pandemic exercise just before before covid hit and now the Pegasus pre planned childhood pandemic exercise before this......

My (at the time) vulnerable 14 month old was vaccinated for flu this season. It's worth asking if your younger one can have it. Although under 2s I know with respiratory issues haven't had it.

YourZippyHare · 11/12/2025 22:23

If your younger one isn't eligible on the NHS, you can pay privately for it. It'll be the jab, not the spray. We did it with our youngest last year when she was around 18 months too.

Ah, my 5 year old is vaccinated, but my 18 month old is too young 🫠🫠🫠 next winter when he’s 2, he will certainly be having it!

I'd contact your GP - DS2 was premature and has a lung condition and he had the flu jab when he was under 2, so it might be possible for your DS to get it.

DP and I both had the flu and COVID jab privately to try and provide some household protection for him.

It's really stressful though, I'm sorry.

Christmaschristingle · 11/12/2025 22:35

I think some gov guidance would be helpful ,remind schools and crowded places to ventilate, remind people to get vaccinated and pay alrhough stocks running low and ask people to consider wearing masks in public crowded places

Unsure why my previous post has been hidden - I just said I’d had the flu and what had helped!

Fernsrus · 11/12/2025 23:07

Get yourself vaccinated OP.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 11/12/2025 23:40

My daughter has got it - four days in bed so far. It's wiped her out.

I had to look after her children for a couple of days this week - I could be getting it quite soon ....

Very sensible. I’ve been trying trying to find somewhere with flu jabs for weeks now and can’t. That tells me that the uptake has been really high, which will hopefully help to stop the spread of infection.
Please try not to worry. You’ve done the best you can by having your little girl vaccinated. That will help to protect your youngest. Our children are adults now. Flu jabs weren’t available as standard when they were little but they never had it.

My sister (in her 70s) rents and the LL and EA wanted to do an inspection next week. She is on drugs to suppress her immune system (which is attacking her liver) and has beena advised to avoid outside contact while this virulent strain of flu is about. She emailed to defer the inspection until after New Year but the EA was not pleased. I have just composed a very strongly worded email for her to send, reminding the EA that he has a duty of care for her as a vulnerable person, and threatening to refer the matter to her solicitor and his regulator.

My ds got back from holiday last evening very lethargic and unwell.
He got worse through the night and has had a temperature of 40 today not responding to paracetamol, he has aches and pains all over his body , a cough, sore throat and cold sweats
and shivering.

I was really worried and rang the doctor surgery this afternoon as his temperature was not coming down, they wanted to see him and turns out it's the flu.
He was told to go to A&E if his temperature stays the same tonight, it stayed around 40 and only the last hour or so has come down to 38
Think he's in for a rough few days and to top it off my dd came home from school unwell with similar but not as bad as ds
I'm the only one in the house who had the flu jab so we'll see

My little one had similar issues to yours as a baby and my GP agrees to do flu vaccine when he was 1 because of it. It was a bit of a battle and was a needle not the spray but for my peace of mind worth it

FourChimneys · 12/12/2025 13:44

I am immunocompromised. My consultant says this is absolutely not just another normal flu season. I don't remember schools having to close although I think they may have in the serious epidemic in the 60s.

Without being paranoid or spoiling my life I am taking small steps to avoid busy places such as cafes and shops. Easily done and I would prefer not to be seriously unwell.

That's interesting, when was the exercise ? What did it entail ?

Elaina87 · 12/12/2025 16:01

It is worrying and I have health anxiety too. Try not to watch her news and the reports cos that 100% fuels it! I keep just trying to think if it wasn't for that I would be non the wiser at the moment. We had a horrible flu bug 2 years ago and there wasn't all this in the news, it can happen any time. Lots of Vit C and just take of yourselves.

Disenchantedone · 13/12/2025 20:08

OP just be prepared. Make sure you have some honey and lemon for sore throat, some calpol, some flu capsules for yourself, a jar of vick, a box of tissues or ten and some karvol. Make sure kids wash their hands if out and about.

All of the above has helped our family. Four of us have had/got it, one small child included. It is lasting over 2 weeks.

Where did you find it? I can’t find any private places willing to vaccinate my just turned 2 year old!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/12/2025 21:39

We’ve all had the flu vaccine and I’m trying to get the vitamins and proper food into everyone. Hard at this time of year!

There’s not much achieved by stressing though.

Hdpr · 14/12/2025 21:44

The flu vaccine this year is actually a fairly good match so everyone who can be vaccinated should be. Ask the GP about your 2yo. Adults can get an £10 jab on the high street if needs be. Other than that, don’t panic. Wash hands, stuff everybody full of vitamin C rich foods. That’s all you can do

When my DS was that age (or maybe a bit younger), I found a private GP that would do it.
