Be honest - would you be put off by a female ‘Colin Hunt’?

When I was 12 and just started high school I developed a ‘Colin Hunt’ - think ‘not 3 bad’ ,

“im mad me” and comedy Disney tie!

well I wasn’t literally wearing a comedy Disney tie especially at school etc but I was wearing one in a figurative sense iyswim.

I developed this persona to compensate for being introverted and having low self esteem in primary school.

I was very very unpopular- I was a fat, spotty female Colin Hunt!

So I just want to know - what would you honestly think of this type of character? What would you think projecting this kind of persona would say about a person in a broader sense ?

Colin Hunt, his name closely resembles the character Canio, which gives the strongest clue to his complex motives. Although seemingly a lively and engaging comedic performer, the tears this clown's mask hides spring from jealous and murderous urges which ultimately will burst through the surface as he commits the most violent and unspeakable acts in full public view.

If it's helpful feedback, i find your post annoying mainly because i have no idea what it is about.

Sorry I’ve now updated

My DH went through a phase of saying "Righty-Cokey" in a 'hilarious' but annoyingly incorrect mash up of righty-oh and okey dokey.

I love the man a great deal but I had to put my foot down. It was me or the phrase.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2025 11:52

So basically you were the "annoying" person at school 😂
At least you were probably memorable.

Upholstery · 11/12/2025 11:54

Timmy Mallet isn't all bad. His col-lab with BOMBALURINA gave him a number one hit - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.

True .. I absolutely don’t dislike him I enjoyed his programs - he was a major part of my televisual childhood -,but him in his Wacaday! era is the closest thing I can think of to a Colin Hunt persona

A reference to The Fast Show might have helped explain what you are asking @The1976

Edited

Sorry I honestly thought I’d put one in my OP! I now see that I didn’t

Sorry to be "that poster", but are you autistic? That type of thinking "the actual me doesn't work very well so here's a persona that I think will work better" seems like masking.

5128gap · 11/12/2025 12:06

Colin Hunt is an unattractive odd ball who desperately wants to be liked and thinks the way to do that is to make people laugh. Unfortunately he is not funny and hss no social awareness, so just ends up irritating his colleagues by repeating silly words and playing practical jokes. Often when it's inappropriate. When people don't laugh he either tries harder because they 'need cheering up' or sadly concludes they have no sense of humour. He is a very sad character because he's locked into a cycle of the harder he tries, the less he is accepted, so the harder he tries.
I'm interested OP in how you stopped being Colin? Was there a light bulb moment when you realised your behaviour was making it worse not better? Or did you eventually make friends despite your behaviour and so had no further need for it?

Well I’ve certainly now being diagnosed autistic - I had low self esteem due to abuse

I was like this at school too OP. I was pretty unpopular and I cringe when I look back on how I acted. It’s a phase though, and doesn’t say anything about the person I am now. The same goes for you. 🙂

If you were 12 in the 90s were you not, like, newborn in 84?
Anyway, I don't know what Colin Hunt is, or the Fast Show, but 'I'm mad, me' types aren't trying to be likeable. You were a child.

I clicked this thread thinking it was about a serial killer, wrong Colin.

Wildbushlady · 11/12/2025 12:17

I genuinely thought this would be about dating a man named Colin Hunt and worrying about being with a C.Hunt when his name is called out!

As for what you actually mean op, please dont beat yourself up about it. It is very common for people with low self esteem or social issues (autism etc.) to develop a mask like this. Your diagnosis may help you relax enough to start being yourself, when you realise people won't like you anyway so you may as well stop acting!

The kind of people that cannot see beneath that mask aren't going to be your type of people anyway, so forget about them.

PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2025 12:17

I used to love The Fast Show, apart from this one character ( had no idea his name was Colin Hunt).

That’s the thing ! In late 1984/ early 85 i was an unattractive oddball !

your description of him is so detailed and accurate I just had to look him up on YouTube for one of his sketches !

his laugh is very distinctive !

dud you remember the secretary played by Arabella Weir I think who absolutely adored him?

No I was 12 in 1984 BUT it’s only on the 90s on seeing the character Colin Hunt in the Fast Show that I saw that this character was a close approximation of how I was if you see what I mean

Yes I was fat in my Colin Hunt days but shed that persona and got genuine friends aged 13 when I slimmed down and became a normal weight

Ah, ok, thanks for the update op. FWIW I would avoid a Timmy Mallett type like the plague on account of risking life in prison for murder if I spent any time with him, lol. I don’t have the patience for that type of insecure attention seeking, just find it insufferably annoying I’m afraid.

I do. And the absolutely awful ending when they turn the tables on Colin and tell him, as a practical joke, that he's sacked and he throws her, the only person who offered friendship, under the bus by asking for her to be sacked instead of him.
The absolute genius of Whitehouse and Co that they can pack so many layers of human behaviour into a few minutes of a sketch.
