I keep waking up at 5am every morning!

It’s doing my head in. I’m so tired. I wake up at 5 and can’t get back to sleep.
Went to bed about 10:30pm. What’s going on?! Is there any way I can change this? It’s really making me miserable. My DH’s alarm goes off at 6 so I’m just lying awake waiting for it to go off.

I am in bed by nine most nights and sleep soundly until five.

I love getting up early, it’s the best part of the day.

Get up! Pop a warm tracksuit on and go for a walk. You will really enjoy your breakfast when you get back and the thirty minutes exercise will energise you for the day!

You've had 7 hours sleep though, that's a good chunk of sleep.

I would love to get this much sleep. Not trying to play some sort of competitive lack of sleep game😆 I’m just a terrible sleeper. Always have been. Six to seven hours is great for me when I manage it. But it’s usually about five. On the rare occasion that I get eight hours, I get a headache. I appreciate it’s different for everyone though. I do remember waking at exactly 5am every morning and not gettIng back over when I was suffering from depression.

Same except for me it’s 3am. I lie in bed trying to sleep for a bit then doing a body scan meditation then give in and get up around 5. I do actually love getting up before everyone else now and sitting in quiet with my cup of tea but 3am can fuck off. Sometimes I think I’ve successfully gone back to sleep but actually only ten minutes have passed!

For me, it can be 3 or 5, but it's often 5 hours after I went to sleep. The worst thing is that I often feel sleepy again around 6.30, but then it's time to get up.

Coffeesoon · 11/12/2025 20:45

I'm between 3 and 5am, if im absolutely desperate for sleep I have a piriton and sleep for 8 hours. Joys of perimenopause I think

I don’t think I’m in peri or menopause as I’m 36.
I do have ADHD and Autism. I’ve always struggled with my sleep but this recent waking at 5 and not getting back to sleep is doing me in.

So I’ve heard people say set your alarm for 1am or some other ungodly time and then go back to sleep. It resets your sleep pattern or something and you should stay asleep longer in the morning.

i am an early waker but during lambing i sleep longer in the mornings as I have to wake and check the lamb camera at 3am.

worth a try? Don’t blame me if you are awake from 1am tho….. 😬

Go and look at the sky! It’s a beautiful time of day ☺️

It’s pitch black at the moment!!

I’m 35 and AuDHD too. I go through periods of waking up at 5am every morning - the last one was in the summer and then I was sleeping much better but it suddenly started again about a week ago. I’m exhausted 😭

I also take magnesium glycinate and I find that it helps me fall asleep but not stay asleep.

7 hours sleep is something that seems so impossible to me. It's a full night's sleep that I can only dream of.

Blimey ,if piriton works just take it and pretend you have hay fever and get a good night's sleep!

dogsandbudgey · 11/12/2025 22:24

I deliberately set my alarm at 5 so that I can enjoy the house in silence. It’s my favourite time of the day

Summerlovin24 · 12/12/2025 08:19

What's the problem. I do that. 6.5 hours sleep is enough so you are waking up. Get up and do something. I am most productive between 5 and 8 am. Exercise, tidy, laundry then go to work feeling good and relax later on

It's December. It's dark at 5am. 🙄

OP I was like this when I hit perimenopause, awake with a jolt at ridiculous hours of the morning and no hope of getting back to sleep. Magnesium supplements helped a bit, but it was really only HRT which sorted it.

How old are you?

Doone22 · 12/12/2025 12:35

Either get up. Or get a headband with earphones so you can listen to relaxing stuff

I'm 42 and in peri heading towards meno, looking back, mine started five years ago. It took me two years to realise and another two to be believed, I wouldn't rule it out. Start tracking things in the balance menopause app.

Mine was waking early too.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/12/2025 19:54

I wake up at 3.20 every day, for no reason. I admit that my alarm starts to go off at 3.45, but... really? Can I not just sleep through a whole night by myself? I mean, you thought I'd be able to manage this now that I am all grown up!

It doesn't matter what time I go to bed, either. Unless I take a sleeping tablet, it takes over an hour to fall asleep, and I'll still wake up at 3.20... even on my rare days off! If I do get a lie-in, my neighbour wakes me up religiously by slamming car doors at 8.30 at the latest. I work 14 hour days and I would just like to sleep through!

Also to add, currently waiting for an ADHD assessment. Isn't it fun being female....

I am waking at 4.30/5 am and unable to drop off again. It is making me unwell. Fatigue, sore eyes and styes; feeling run down and very grumpy. To those saying embrace the day, we all react differently to lack of sleep. I am a morning person, but this is far too early for me. I've tried everything under the sun for more sleep.
