To move my kid to a different school?

Not that much an AIBU but wanted a bit of traffic. Have DD10 and DS8 at used to be all girls school. Academic for area.

DD is thriving, loves it. Mild dyslexia problems I.e. spelling and reading out loud but they love her, she loves the school. All good.

DS not thriving. Very social kid so loves school generally but they are worried about reading, writing and behaviour. Nothing bad but can’t settle in class etc.

I suspect mild dyslexia AND mild ADHD which are working against each other, and his confidence. He’s a bright kid but young for age.

im just not sure it’s the school for him? There is another private school locally with much worse results but I think they might focus more on the actual child, rather than just fitting the ‘bright’ mould.

when would you consider changing? They have said will assess for SEND in NY and put in a plan do him. He is happy and settled.

If he is happy and has friends I don’t think I would move him. If he doesn’t settle at the new school he won’t thrive there either.

I wouldn’t change schools unless absolutely necessary. Urgent assessments for his potential ADHD so that you can understand what his needs are and consider medication. Assessment for dyslexia & consider a specialist dyslexia tutor who might be able to teach him in a way that works better and catch him up academically.

My personal experience with dyslexia is that children do catch up. With the right support. It just takes a little longer to work out which ways of learning work best for the individual. When the code has been cracked, progress is swift. Keeping confidence up is the most important thing.

The school itself doesnt make a difference to another school. Every public school is the same, and every private school is the same, and every home schooling teaches the same. Of course the difference is the character and discipline of the teachers. I think settling in and remaining focused on schooling is important.
