Dog noise after 8:30

Please dear dog owners could you let me know what is reasonable on dog noise outdoors in the garden on an evening?

I’d hope it would not involve barking after around 8:30pm or before 8am - what would a responsible dog owner have to say about this in a built up urban neighbourhood?

I have a noisy dog just over the back garden fence hence the question- and not sure what is reasonable… I do v much want to be reasonable but I also really want to relax…

aibu : dogs bark and you need to accept this after 8:30pm and before 8am

yanbu: after 8:30pm and before 8am dogs should be able to be trained not to bark - it’s a reasonable ask

I would say no earlier than 7am and no later than 11pm

Hmm I think it depends how much barking. I let mine out for a wee around 10pm and he will bark once or twice as he’s a little scared of the dark garden and all the (imagined) predators he thinks are there, but I will always shush him after one or two. To be honest I would never let him stand out there and continuously bark no matter the time of day

I've yet to train my dog to be able to tell the time 🤣

But he is trained not to bark in the garden at all.

Having said that, all bets seem to be off when the foxes are mating.

Though he's generally quieter than the screeching and squawking from them all night anyway.

Any prolonged barking is not ok. It’s a really irritating noise. The occasional bark is ok.

Any barking before 9 is extremely irritating. I can’t sleep with my bedroom windows open as a neighbour thinks it’s ok for her dog to bark when she lets it out in the morning. It wakes me up and it’s so frustrating.

Does your dog bark if you go out with it?

Cardinalita90 · 10/12/2025 23:25

I would say between 10pm and 8am is unreasonable. Dogs are going to bark sometimes but it's on owners to supervise their dog and be there to shh them if they start at unsociable hours. I had a neighbour where every single morning their little dog would bark at 6:30 am for up to 10 minutes and it was torture.

BlueIris111 · 10/12/2025 23:26

How strict are you about the barking ? Sometimes mine might bark when they pop out to the toilet for 5-10 minuets because of foxes and rats but stop when they come in unless someone comes home late at night and they get suprised by the noise so give a few yaps. Excessive barking though your fine to be upset about that. That’s like a dog barking longer than 20 minuets non stop . The owner should have done something to stop it or shouldn’t have left them out. That being said if that happens once I wouldn’t be mad at someone but if it kept happening regularly then I’d have a problem. There was someone near us who left the dogs out all night and no one could get any sleep they howled all night long.

I have a yappy terrier.
She is territorial and I cannot guarantee that she will not bark in the garden.
Whatever the time of day, I call her in if she barks more than a few times.
I do not let her out at night because she will bark at nothing.
She's my dog. She shouldn't be annoying other people..

It rather depends on the amount of barking really. My in laws live near houses with dogs that seem to bark constantly and it’s horrendous and you worry too about their wellbeing. But if a dog if let out for a pre-bed wee then generally they will give a few barks - night, foxes, excitement etc. But a couple of barks hardly bothers anyone and it would be rather cruel to not let them out from 8pm until 9am. Most dog owners I know send them out for a few minutes before bedtime and when they wake up.

mondaytosunday · 11/12/2025 11:42

Never is my answer. My dog does give the occasional bird a bark or if the kids be t door are running around making noise, but I promptly call her in. So say 15 seconds of barking at any time max, and that’s probably too much.

DaisyChain505 · 11/12/2025 11:44

A dog being put out for a wee and having a quick bark at a bird or wanting to come back Inside, acceptable.

A dog being shut in the garden for a long period of time and barking continuously, not acceptable.

If it’s the latter I would be popping a polite note through their letterbox.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 11/12/2025 11:51

It’s prolonged barking that’s an issue though isn’t it. We have a dog and we always accompany her on her last toilet visit before bed so she doesn’t bark her arse off at foxes/the wind/leaves. However in the morning post 7am she pops out she rarely barks but may do one or two if she sees a cat etc.

However a family in our street regularly let their lovely dog bark for hours on long summer evenings. Presume the back door is open and they can’t hear her but it’s bloody awful. This can go on from 10/11pm or so. Not okay. I did have to say something in the end. It’s much better now.

Brenda34 · 12/12/2025 11:51

Prolonged barking when there's no good reason (ie intruders) isn't acceptable or useful. I never shush my dog when she barks to warn me that someone is approaching the housebecause that'spart of her 'job'.
A few barks to chase a squirrel out of the garden is fine.
