A rat in the wall

One ha ps decided to die in the wall cavity in the kitchen. The stink is awful. The kitchen is less than 10 months old all walls ceilings etc have been rebuilt after a top down flood 15 months ago. We can’t get the body out without destroying the kitchen but the stink is awful . What can I do.

Gosh that's grim. Exterminators? Many cats?

My cat released a rat in the house today, luckily caught and kiled it later 🤢

The smell will go after a few weeks if you can put up with it that long? 😞

Bobiverse · 10/12/2025 22:08

If you can’t get to it then you just have to wait for it to decompose and the smell to dissipate. Anything from 2 to 6 weeks, maybe longer. But at least it’s winter. It’s worse in summer.

calishire · 10/12/2025 22:10

sorry to tell you but we had this and the smell lasted over 8 weeks and then we had a massive fly infestation. It was absolutely grim.

rosierosierosie · 10/12/2025 22:10

It’s awful but it’ll go eventually, don’t ruin your new kitchen. Air fresheners and lots of fresh air.

Ydkiml · 10/12/2025 22:13

The smell will go but find out how it got there in the first place . If the rat could they you will get more . . You need to block up the opening .

BMW6 · 10/12/2025 22:26

Put out a big dish of bicarbonate of soda. Will absorb smells.

When this happened to me, the council's pest man reckoned it got in where a bit of mortar was missing. He said that they can get through much smaller gaps than people realise.

We had some repointing done and it's been fine so far (touches wood).

Once it had got in the cavity wall, it got all the way up to the loft and the fucker gnawed at on some of the joists.

I fucking hate the bastards.

Lavenderosemary · 10/12/2025 22:33

Dehumidifier on full blast, keep the doors shut. Dessicate the bastard. The smell will go as soon as it dries out.

Speaking as a rural person who is fucking tormented by rats.

Lavenderosemary · 10/12/2025 22:35

Oh - put the heating on full blast in that room too. It will make it worse initially, but will be over faster.
