To ask how you wash your toddlers hair?

DD is 1.5, she is very hyperactive in general, in the bath I can get her to sit still just about with bath toys but when it comes to washing her hair I struggle, I tell her to look up and she doesn’t so I use a cup to wash her hair, I have baby friendly shampoo so doesn’t hurt her eyes but when I wash her hair obviously water goes in her eyes and she jumps up and runs about, it’s difficult trying to keep her safe whilst washing her hair, please tell me someone tips as one day she is going to fall and hurt herself

Get one of those plastic crowns from amazon. We had foams ones as kids! Now my dd is older she manages to tip her head back.

It was a while ago - but with this jug, made it easier to rinse. https://www.boots.com/mothercare-rinse-cup-white-10336521

We use a headband thing made of towelling from Superdrug. I do it as she plays in the bath - she moans but let's me do it.
Shes 3 now but when she was 1.5 we did.it twice a week, now its longer we do it three times a week with a spray leave in conditioner which I comb through as it gets tangled!

Girasoli · 10/12/2025 19:45

Rather than tip a cup of water over her head to rinse it, you could rub her head with a wet flannel to get the shampoo out? I used to do that when my boys were toddlers but they had short hair.

Aparecium · 10/12/2025 20:12

Shallow bath which she lies down in. There will be enough water in it to rinse almost all the shampoo out while she is lying down. If you’re worried about some being left behind, then one jug of fresh water over the top just before she gets out of the bath. There will not be enough shampoo in her hair for it to sting.

But, because she’s already got an issue about hair washing, do lying down in a shallow bath for a week or so before you start with the shampoo. Similarly, practice pouring fresh water over her head and face as a game (she can even do that herself) before you do it as part of shampooing. If she likes the game she may not even realise that it is part of hairwash.

How often do you wash her hair? At that age, we only rinsed their hair (part of practicing getting face wet for swimming). Washed with shampoo maybe once every 2-3w.

Ha.

confession of a desperate mum of wild haired girls

the angel care bath seat for babies.

They sit or lie on it. Right back. Hair done. Move on.

Not its intended purpose. Far too old for it. But My goodness if I forget it on holiday I know about it. MY EYES 👀

cocobanana92 · 10/12/2025 20:15

I've always just used a jug and got straight on with it. He's used to it now and closes his eyes when I need to rinse.

BlackberryAppleCrumble · 10/12/2025 20:17

What @Aparecium said, but use a wet sponge rather than a jug to rinse the bits of hair at the front that aren’t in the water. it’s easier to make sure none at all goes in her eyes.

Or get her to look up at a toy and tip her own head back, say stop before she gets her eyes wet.

I do this too (but I also have a boy)

My DD thankfully still has short hair (23 months) i just used a damn flannel, wipe it iver her head, rinse, wring, repeat until no bubbles left, i am slowly teaching her to lie back in the water but she isn’t confident lying on her back, will happily lie on her front xx
