Met up with an old friend I’d lost touch with, we went out for dinner last night.

He asked if I was with anyone and really pushed the point of wanting to know my dating history from when I last saw him. I have no desire to discuss it and so I said basically there hasn’t been anyone since my breakup.

He did the head tilt and said - such a shame as you’re so lovely and I know you’ve always wanted a boyfriend.

This was said by someone who once cried in the middle of a bar so loudly people were staring because he wanted a boyfriend so badly (he does now have a boyfriend). I’ve never once said I’m desperate to be with anyone? I was definitely sad after my breakup, but that was the loss of someone I genuinely wanted to be with rather than depressed I was single.

Aibu to have been annoyed? People have such selective memories.

This all sounds so prickly and defensive, maybe he got the impression that there was more to it? I'm not sure that I'd find his comment annoying though- he was being concerned, albeit in a clumsy and maybe unnecessary way.

It was the comment about me being desperate for a boyfriend. I have never been desperate to have a boyfriend.

The same person that said it was one who would end up crying on nights out because they were single.

There's generally a good reason for losing touch with friends.

Dollymylove · 10/12/2025 14:37

I would be annoyed by that. It’s being used as a stick to beat you with.

JHound · 10/12/2025 15:14

I would find that comment annoying too. I hate anybody asking me about my dating life - I cannot fathom why they ever care.

Endofyear · 10/12/2025 15:16

Why would you not just correct him there and then?

You can't fathom why your friends would care about your dating life?

Why wouldn't they? They're your friends. Being friends generally means caring about, and discussing, each other's personal lives, of which dating is a pretty ordinary element. I don't think it's especially normal to have friends and never discuss your relationships with them.
