Feeling really awful about myself and my son.

Hello guys,

Hope you’re all having a wonderful day. I am currently struggling with my self esteem and confidence because I am a sufferer of chronic bad breath since about 8 years old. My eldest son was born with bad breath. Doctors are so confused and just throw the usual “it’s acid reflux”. Dentists say we have lovely teeth and a clean mouth. We still stink so bad. My bad breath is at a point where I can no longer mask it with chewing gum. I floss, brush and use mouthwash before I leave the house and I still get reactions from people.

I feel guilty that I passed this horrible disease onto my son. He is only 4 yeas old, he should be enjoying his life. He also has eczema, severe allergies, asthma and autism. Poor kid has a lot going on.

I just can’t take it anymore. The doctors have no idea and I don’t have tonsil stones. I’m really struggling with the bad breath, especially because now my son is suffering. He is repeating what the kids have said to him. After school he kept repeating “you’re stinky”. It breaks my heart to watch him go through what I went through as a kid. I really worry about his future.

People avoid talking to me at his school because of this disease. I’m not sure how much longer I can go on for like this. Thank you for reading. I can’t speak about this to anyone in real life so thanks for reading.

Twice daily sinus rinse?

I used to flush out my sinuses with salt water using sinus rinse, made no difference to my breath.

Can you try something sweet to disguise your breath? Like a sugary snack? I know that's like the opposite of sense but 🤷‍♀️🥺

Sorry girl, its not nice to see your baby suffering xx

The sugary stuff makes it worse, so I generally avoid sugar.

LPR is notorious for causing bad breath.....I have it too and it's horrific.

It sounds like you have that too.....or GERD. Don't be adding acidic anything to your diet, you need to have an extremely low acid diet. No spices, no garlic, no onion etc, low fat and little red meat. . It's miserable but if you stick to it you do get results. There are groups on Facebook for people who have Gerd and lpr which are really helpful.

If it is LPR, wouldn’t omeprazole help? Also, coild a baby be born with bad breath due to LPR.

Maybe SIBO, OP? Do you have any other symptoms?

Jollyjoy · 11/12/2025 21:14

Op, has the doctor confirmed that they feel both you and your son have bad breath?

OneGreySeal · 11/12/2025 21:25

Op try fermented products for your gut. I reckon that’s the issue.

Calendulaaria · 11/12/2025 21:26

I'll probably get told off on here, but I would see a naturopath or homeopath for this.

Bushwoolie · 11/12/2025 21:30

Have you asked for a referral to an ENT specialist?
This doesn't sound like something within the GPs scope of knowledge.

Imonmyway · 11/12/2025 21:32

Have you been tested for haemocromatosis?

PonkyPonky · 11/12/2025 21:36

DS has this. I started giving him Kefir every day and it has massively improved so I think in his case, it’s gut health related. Have you tried that?

I did do a test for sibo, the result was negative for sibo.

I haven’t tried kefir, but I have tried probiotics for the gut and for the oral microbiome.

No I haven’t, first time I’ve heard of it.

Have you tried zinc lozenges?

scott2609 · 11/12/2025 21:44

I appreciate you’ve probably tried this or similar and I imagine it won’t work, but I thought there was no harm in recommending it. My son (slightly younger than yours) has gone through periods of having really bad breath, despite his teeth being brushed thoroughly twice a day, and taking daily probiotics. This unflavoured mouthwash has completely got rid of it:

Genetic imbalance of the thyroid gland?

BringBackCatsEyes · 11/12/2025 22:04

Hope54321 · 10/12/2025 14:46

The doctor has given me omeprazole so far, it’s made no difference in terms of my breath and has also caused diarrhea. Every time I bring up my son, they’re not intere and say children always change.

one doctor said if it’s due to genetics, there’s nothing that can be done about it.

Have you explored the genetic possibility?

Malbucket · 11/12/2025 22:06

Guess you have already tried chewing cloves? Lots of overlapping benefits I have only just discovered!

Namechangerage · 11/12/2025 22:10

Hope54321 · 10/12/2025 14:48

Hi there, yes I was thinking maybe it is due to a mebolic condition. I don’t believe it’s due to acid reflux because my other family members have acid reflux and they smell normal.

Could you go private?

chrissycn11 · 11/12/2025 22:14

Google Dr Ellie Phillips and look at her mouth care system and all the reviews she gets. The improvement in oral heath is enormous.
