To ask if you think this was wrong of the teacher?

My friend said that they have been late to school a couple of times since September.

Her car broke down on Monday and they are not within walking distance so they were late again on Monday. She said that her youngest (age 6, year 2) is now really anxious to be late because apparently her teacher shouted at her last time about it. This has also been confirmed by their TA. She was worried about going into that school on Monday about what her teacher would say.

just asking as wondering what other people think to this?

Yes of course that would be wrong. A six year old has no control over what time adults bring her to school. If that was my child I would be following it up with the school

The teacher shouldn't shout at any child but especially one who has no control about what time she gets there.
I think i would go into school with her if they're late again.

If the class TA is willing to talk negatively about their teacher to a parent, then you have bigger problems to worry about when sending your child back into that class.

Obviously, teachers shouldn’t be shouting at a child for any reason, even if they did do something wrong, but people’s perceptions of what is shouting, vary.

Mum should be getting child to school on time. There are no excuses for not doing so.

MagpiePi · 10/12/2025 09:11

Did the teacher shout at the child for being late or was it something like she came in and was then being disruptive?

I'm sure a teacher knows that a 6 year doesn't have much control over a car breaking down.

Have you ever had a car breakdown? It is not something you plan.

Buscobel · 10/12/2025 09:14

I’d also wonder whether there was a nearer school within walking distance, so the worry about being late because of the car journey wouldn’t apply.

Ablondiebutagoody · 10/12/2025 09:23

She should quit the excuses and get to school on time. Currently settling a poor example for dd.

surreygirly · 10/12/2025 09:25

Personally In would not worry about it in the least
She is as we all do going to experience far worse than that in life
Certainly I was shouted at at school - did no harm whatsoever
It is not a big deal to me

There are plenty of perfectly valid reasons for not being able to get a child to school on time.

I doubt the teacher shouted at the pupil. Recently a lot of children interpret any sort of authoritative tone (eg “you’re late, and we’ve already started the lesson”) as being shouted at.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/12/2025 10:09

If the teacher really did shout at a small child, the TA should be raising this with SMT rather than covertly telling parents about it - that’s really not appropriate of them and it would make me doubt the veracity of what they’re saying somewhat, tbh.
