Is it acceptable to play "controversial" songs at a work Christmas do?

Something like Bob Vylan, Kneecap or anything else sectarian?

I have an opinion on this but would appreciate the hive mind.

YABU - they're just songs
YANBU - wildly inappropriate

Depends where you work I suppose. If you work in or for those bands I'd say it's fine. Otherwise no.

Allseeingallknowing · 09/12/2025 15:53

A Christmas Works do is not the place for inappropriate songs- could cause a lot of bad feeling and trouble. Christmas is a time for goodwill. I’m sure you know that!

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 09/12/2025 15:53

What kind of place do you work at? I can't imagine going to a Christmas do and hearing anything like that but I'm guessing maybe you're Irish and it's something that might conceivably happen

randomchap · 09/12/2025 15:54

Nope, bland politics free stuff at work

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/12/2025 15:54

What do you hope to achieve by playing those controversial songs?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/12/2025 15:55

Or if that's not yo wanting to play them, then what would be thinking behind it?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 09/12/2025 15:59

I think it's absolutely unacceptable, for the record

I think in UK employment law a work Christmas do can be seen as an extension of the workplace, and so employees who might be subject to disciplinary for playing those songs in the office, shouldn't play them at a company do. I also think it's just unnecessary, really. A work Christmas party is not the time to be 'edgy'.

blackberryhill · 09/12/2025 16:08

Best to keep it neutral at a works do, I'd say. Nothing to gain and a lot to potentially lose by pushing the boundaries.

Wellyoudidaskaboutit · 09/12/2025 16:11

Cuntology 101 by Lambrini Girls just played in my office, I think they’d be ok here.

LlynTegid · 09/12/2025 16:13

They are not Christmas songs, the most controversial should be Stop the Cavalry or Fairytale of New York.

LittleGreenDuck · 09/12/2025 16:26

Blimey. My work do is more Wham and Mariah Carey.

JeRevien · 09/12/2025 16:27

I thought you were gonna say something like by Gary Glitter or Michael Jackson

Checknotmymate · 09/12/2025 16:28

No songs would be my preference

Dollymylove · 09/12/2025 16:29

No. A Christmas party isnt the place to make "statements" People want disco bangers at parties not politically motivated shite

Createausername1970 · 09/12/2025 16:44

It's awkward. In my opinion the best Christmas songs originated from the 50s (crooners) and then the 70s and a few in the 80s. They were part of my growing up and were "modern" to me and they are very nostalgic for me, and part of the whole Christmas vibe.

But I totally understand that those from the next generation are not so fond of them, and want to play something more relevant, rather than the same old songs every year.

But I don't think a works Xmas do is the place for political statements etc. And most people would probably be too pissed to know what was playing anyway.

Xiaoxiong · 09/12/2025 17:10

I thought this was going to be about Fairytale of New York, in which case I was going to say the radio edit is available....

Bob Vylan, Kneecap or sectarian songs completely unacceptable at a work party.

Octavia64 · 09/12/2025 17:10

Nope.

bland Christmas shite all the way
