Yes 100% carrying extra weight can cause heartburn!

I put on about 25 lb in a rather short amount of time when I had a thyroid issue.
Not long after that I started developing extremely painful acid reflux / heartburn. No over-the-counter medications gave any relief, (nor did consuming dairy like yogurt or milk as some people would suggest)

I had to go and get a prescription beta blocker from the doctor, it was a pill that I took once a day and it did about a 98% great job in preventing the extremely painful heartburn.
I lost the weight, and realized I no longer had heartburn anymore and I asked my doctor is it okay if I go off these and she says yeah, you can stop anytime, (you don't need to wean off them)

So I did, and I've never used them since, as long as I keep the weight off, I've almost never had heartburn come back since.

I got heartburn because I had a stomach ulcer. A course of antibiotics later, no more ulcer and no more heartburn.

Don't put off seeing your doctor about your heartburn because you think it will be dismissed as caused by your weight.

Ladyzfactor · 09/12/2025 02:33

Definitely. I was about 40 lbs overweight at one time and got heartburn constantly. Lost the excess weight and now only get heartburn on occasion.

BlondeBonBon · 09/12/2025 02:40

Gluten gives me heartburn

Zanatdy · 09/12/2025 04:43

Yes, 100%. Only time i’ve had heartburn is when pregnant but my friend and her DH are both pretty overweight (20 stone plus) and suffer a lot with it. You’d definitely feel better if return to a healthy weight.

Lurkingandlearning · 09/12/2025 05:08

Yes it can but @WhereYouLeftIt is right. Weight isn’t the only possible cause

Valeriekat · 09/12/2025 06:08

Ask the Doctor if you have a hiatus hernia.

Disturbia81 · 09/12/2025 06:13

Yes I did but I’m not sure if it was the extra fat or the types of fatty oily foods I ate back then.

tuvamoodyson · 09/12/2025 06:55

Yes.

statetrooperstacey · 09/12/2025 12:58

Yes definitely, still needs treating though no matter the cause.

TheTaupeScroller · 09/12/2025 13:13

Of course

it shouldn't stop you from seeing your GP, even if it's only due to excess weight, it's not a good idea to just put up with it.

Someone will soon jump on here calling "body shamers!" but it's true, medically excess weights has consequences.

JohnTheRevelator · 09/12/2025 13:16

When I was very overweight I used to get it frequently and my GP said it was because of my weight. However,I still get it now that I've lost weight. So I'd say yes,it's possible it's the cau,but not absolutely definitely.

GentleSheep · 09/12/2025 13:16

Yes I used to get it due to hypothyroidism which causes low stomach acid (also gives you reflux as food isn't digested properly). I fixed it by taking Betaine HCl capsules, but there are other ways, you can take lemon juice (diluted) prior to meals, ditto with apple cider vinegar (diluted) or take Swedish bitters. All those stimulate stomach acid. If you are hypothyroid still then you may have a similar problem.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 09/12/2025 13:20

Definitely. I get it when I have put on too much weight.

DierdreDaphne · 09/12/2025 13:21

I notice i get heartburn once im over a certain weight (even though my weight only fluctuate s over 3 or 4 kg generally). I think part of the issue might be that more of my clothes are tight at the upper weight. So it can definitely contribute but also, so can bending down too soon after eating and many other things

Dontyoulooktired · 09/12/2025 13:23

Yes but it what you eat.

I used to be 25 stone. I suffered with constant heartburn. But I wasn’t 25 stone due to eating salad. It was the constant shit I was eating to gain and maintain that weight that was causing me issues.

So I don’t think it’s just being overweight alone that causes it.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/12/2025 13:24

it could also be whatever you're eating that's making you overweight that's giving you heartburn - it tends to be triggered by fatty foods.

LoserWinner · 09/12/2025 13:25

It is one very common cause of heartburn. A few years ago, I was swigging Gaviscon at the rate of a couple of bottles a week. Had omeprazole for a while, but had unpleasant side effects, so stopped. Lost 6 stone three years ago. Haven’t had any heartburn since.

susiedaisy1912 · 09/12/2025 13:28

Yes absolutely it can cause heartburn. I don’t how or why but I do know that my heartburn has almost completely disappeared since loosing weight and cutting out crap.

QuirkyUmberPoster · 09/12/2025 13:29

In my experience, absolutely yes.
This is by no means medical advice and don’t think it should stop you seeking medical intervention or anything but I have lost 5 stone this year (thanks to jabs) and before I was buying gaviscon weekly and chewing a few basically every night. I can’t remember the last time I had reflux or indegestion. Months and months. Even if I do slip on my eating now, I’m still fine.
