Handbags

Putting here as I wasn't sure where else to stick it, and for traffic.

Around 7 or 8 years ago I worked near a charity shop, and it became my habit to go in most lunchtimes (mainly just for a look around and to get away from the office).

One of the older helpers brought in a load of ‘lower end’ designer handbags – I’m talking Michael Kors, Rocha John Rocha, Zandra Rhodes, Lipsy, Radley etc. She had donated them as she said she couldn’t justify keeping them ‘at my age’ and felt the charity should benefit. Great!

I ended up buying many of these bags for not many ££. I’m not a ‘designer’ person (unless you count Florence and Fred, and George at Asda!), but liked the bags and the price.

So now my question – if I wanted to sell the bags now how would I go about authenticating them? For example I have looked on Wikihow about the Michael Kors bag I have, and it said it should have a fabric tag inside with a reference number. Mine doesn’t, but everything else looks good – zip tags, lining, etc. Any ideas?

I'm not currently bothered about selling them, more curious about how many millions I am sitting on!

Why don't you gift them back to a charity shop so that they can get the benefit of them?

Strangerthanfictions · 08/12/2025 18:21

I would imagine you would get very little for those types of bags that are a decent age but you could look up similar on vinted and see what the going rate is, it will depend how dated the styles are, the condition and general desirability

If these were at most likely £100 when bought and at now likely over 10 years old, I doubt they'll fetch more than a tenner each. I'd either enjoy them or give them back to charity.

Mummylovesmonkeys · 08/12/2025 18:33

I have considered re-donating/selling for charity, but don't want to be accused of counterfeit goods!

I’d redonate them to a charity shop of your choice.

Keroppi · 08/12/2025 18:36

Just put in the description you're not sure on authenticity and stick them up for a modest price considering the age and condition
You could clean them up with leather cleaner etc and get a bit more than you paid I'm sure. Depop is quite good or mercari I've seen people use
Reddit "repladies" sub reddit should have some guides on authenticity.

PInkyStarfish · 08/12/2025 18:37

I imagine they weren’t the current fashion when the woman donated them and now even more years on they will most likely be worthless.

NoKidsSendDogs · 08/12/2025 18:45

Most designer bags don't have a great resale value, let alone bags like these. You wouldn't get more than £20 for each I would think.

Prelim · 08/12/2025 19:10

You could probably expect to get around £5-10 for each one if you put them on Vinted depending on the condition.

blankcanvas3 · 08/12/2025 19:53

The only designer bags that have a good resale market would be the extremely high end designer ones that still have the boxes/dust bags/proof of authenticity so to be honest you won’t get much for what you have. You might make £20 or so on Vinted, but not much more than that

Marble10 · 08/12/2025 20:01

You wouldn’t need to authenticate Lipsy & Rocha John Rocha. Maybe MK as they do fake them in places like Turkey, but the resale value is very low, £15 ish.
I’d just pop them up for sale. You certainly aren’t sitting on millions unfortunately.
Love a good charity shop designer find myself though!

Mt563 · 08/12/2025 21:45

Charity shop won't care about authenticity, they're not selling at a price where people are expecting that guarantee.

SamBecket · 08/12/2025 21:49

I'm pretty sure that Rocha John Rocha was a diffusion brand for Debenhams, not part of the main line.

You have no idea if they're real but you still bought them. Just chuck them in a carrier bag and pass them on. It's up to the charity to decide if they want to check if they're real.
