Spa days. What is the appeal?

I went on one with my DMIL at the weekend. Found it a bit of a rip off to be honest.

Average treatment, obnoxious other guests in the pool - taking photos, someone in the loungers area talking really loud on the phone about private matters. The food included was underwhelming.

This was a well rated and expensive spa too.

I often see them get high praise on here, so wondering if it’s just me?

I love CP spa! I’ve been to the one in Sherwood. there’s a place called Eden Hall in Nottinghamshire that’s fab, and Ragdale Hall is meant to be great too

We’re near longleat - I love it there!

Like almost anything that is supposed to feel luxurious, you have to spend a bit of money. I’ve been to cheap spas, spas which are on Groupon etc. and they’ve been disappointing to say the least. Spas that are more exclusive, that book up far in advance, never discount and are in the ‘special occasions’ price point, are a much better experience.

I think the idea and anticipation is often better than the reality. I’ve been to some top rated spas and been very disappointed. However, Center Parcs Aqua Sana is amazing! So calm, excellent treatments and so many experiences. Very well designed.

XWKD · 09/12/2025 05:48

They're a great experience for many people, but my idea of Hell. 🤣

PeloMom · 09/12/2025 05:55

I’ve never been in a spa where phones are allowed (most recently last week). It’s supposed to be a peaceful quiet time.
even the sauna had signs if you’re with a friend, to speak in quiet tones.

Iocanepowder · 09/12/2025 06:03

Love them. If’s a rare treat where i get to go to one and with one of my mum friends. It’s like we have permission to relax for the day instead of being parents.

Also they are all different. Some of them have gyms and exercise classes.

They are so expensive though. Especially any treatments. Last time we went, we got a massage at a cheaper local place before checking into a hotel which included use of their spa for free.

It is mn answer to anything husband having an affair have a spa day, Putin getting twitchy have a spa day, Gregg's not having a sale have a spa day, need a present for a woman all they need is a spa day

No idea personally, for people that genuinely want it is have zero opinion like anything that is up to them

But it is the idea all woman need spa days, getting their nails done or having a shopping spree in Prrimark is the only thing women seem to enjoy especially by other women, not forgetting the need to keep looking good for your man or he will cheat, cant get my head round that one

People genuinely love spa days great but not all women do, and yes we are told men love them too

I like spas but they don’t feel worth the money. I much prefer the public spas in Germany. They’re more of a day to day thing, so nowhere near as expensive.

Yes, I agree. Also there's such a variety. I've been to huge ones that have waterparks too then very traditional therapeutic ones. I love it when there's a big choice of saunas too.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/12/2025 07:38

I hate them too, never seen the appeal of sitting around in damp swim wear and a dressing gown for a day!

IamnotSethRogan · 09/12/2025 07:42

They're not for me. After years of shilling out I just say no now when invited. I realised in
was paying a lot of money for something I really didn't get anything from. I can see why people like them but I do not.

TinselAndSparkles · 09/12/2025 07:45

It’s extremely spa dependent but also, you either like them or you don’t 🤷‍♀️ Personally, I love them and have a favourite one that’s about 40 miles from me. We normally only go once a year as it’s pretty expensive and we like to both have a treatment plus lunch/afternoon tea. I’ve also been to some shit spas (before this one) so can understand why people might be a bit ‘meh’ on them.

ConnieHeart · 09/12/2025 08:28

I took my dd2 to a couple, it was just lovely spending time together doing some we wouldn't normally do. But we were pretty much ready to go after a couple of hours. And I didn't pay much either

coolcahuna · 09/12/2025 08:35

I'm a bit over spa days. They have got so expensive! Often cheaper to book an air b n b with a hot tub

canuckup · 09/12/2025 16:30

Only place I've ever enjoyed is Crowood, Lancashire.

You need a better spa!
