Aibu dog attack?

ComfortFoodCafe · 08/12/2025 09:23

I was walking home this morning from the school run when a lady opened her driveway gate and her large dog (im not going to mention the breed but you can probably guess what breed!!) ran up behind me, jumped up and tried to aggressively bite me on the shoulder.
I managed to spin round and hit the dog away with my walking stick and get up on a garden wall as the dog kept trying to bite me!
All while this woman was panicking and couldn’t get control of her dog, it wasn’t listening to her at all! If I was a school child I would of had no hope getting the dog away. The woman eventually managed to get the dog under control after 5 minutes, when her husband came to help.
No apology or anything off the owner!

aibu to report this dog? & is it the police or local dog warden? I am really shook up I don’t really like dogs at the best of times.
Feel bad on the owner but surely its common sense if you cannot control the dog you don’t just aimlessly open your gate and let the dog escape onto the street!

Police 100%, sorry that happened to you, how terrifying

HalfWayAroundTheLoop · 08/12/2025 09:25

I'm not usually in the "report" club but I would in this case. Stupid woman.

Lunchtimehelp · 08/12/2025 09:25

Please report, it could be a child next time and will come worse off.

Report.
I was bit by a dog a couple of months ago. I’ve since seen it out and about a few times and it goes for anyone who walks past it. Nothing has been done but still best reported.

ItsDarkNow · 08/12/2025 09:26

@HelenaWaiting
If you believe the op is a troll then report it.

Jollyjoy · 08/12/2025 09:27

Yes it’s police you need to contact. I’m sorry that happened, how scary.

This is in the top 10% most believable things I've read on Mumsnet tbh. Especially since almost exactly the same thing happened to me when I was a child.

Thats awful I am so sorry that happened to you, I am terrified to walk past the womans house now incase it gets out again I can hear the dog barking & snarling as it lives on the street behind me!
Surely the police are meant to destory dogs who bite?

I will ring the police now & report it. Still bloody shaking from it.

You'd be unreasonable not to report the dog, it could seriously injure or kill the next person, dog or cat it attacks.

Don't feel bad for the owner, they are clearly unable to make sensible decisions and risk assessments so someone else is going to need to do it for them.

LogicVoid · 08/12/2025 09:32

Yes, you must report asap. I'd also be inclined to alert others to the risk on this road via social media until it is addressed. There may be be video footage on house cameras if evidence is needed by police.

No matter the breed it needs reporting a dog attack is a dog attack, I own two big breeds who Iv put a lot of training into and am very confident with their recall but I’d not let them out onto the street to run about especially during the school run times. The owner is fully at fault here

No it was a 3 foot wall. It was the only thing there at the time with any height! It wasnt the best idea but first thing that came to mind was i needed height to get away!
Im in no postion to be climbing 6 foot fences but yes it happened exactly as I said, not sure why MNers feel the need to question everything?
Been reported to the police - would you also like the crime number to verify my post? Hmm

You absolutely must report this to the police. Irresponsible owner and aggressive dangerous dog. Next time it could kill somebody.

Why would she lie? Don’t be weird.
OP, how frightening. Yes please do report-this probably isn’t the first time this dog has bitten and won’t be the last! Hope you are ok.

whymadam · 08/12/2025 10:06

DH has been a morning jogger / runner for 20 yrs or so, has been attacked and bitten by dogs a number of times. He usually yells at the owner (yes, it's sweary) and the dog owners usually tell DH to eff off - even if blood has been drawn. Occasionally he gets an apology
