Really terrified about this flu going around

I’m in a total panic about the flu. It’s everywhere I look online, people are posting about it left, right and centre. Including locally.

I’m always hugely anxious when my DS gets ill anyway and so if he gets it I know I’ll be a wreck. I have bad health anxiety too.

I don’t know anyone personally who has it, but I know it’s just a matter of time.

I’m so worried I’ll get it before Christmas and it’ll all be ruined for our DS. We’re supposed to be going down and staying with family.

Whilst unpleasant for an average person, flu is no more than that for those in good general health and neither very old or young.
Kindly, Yabu to be ‘terrified’ in your demographic and would be best seeking help for your anxiety before it starts to impact your life (or your child) any further

BMW6 · 07/12/2025 22:49

Why are you so frightened? It's not as if people are dropping dead left, right and centre!

seven201 · 07/12/2025 22:50

“However my DH won’t have it done, says it’s pointless and he doesn’t want to, says I’m making a fuss about nothing. He works in a school so very likely to pick it up and pass it on here.”

Your DH isn’t very likely to pick it up. I teach in a large secondary and have paid for my own jab to minimise the risk, but it wouldn’t be a high risk.

Heyheyitsanotherday · 07/12/2025 22:51

would you have been this anxious is 2019 op? I think Wer all a little altered after Covid but rationale this… the flu has always been around. Why would you be at more risk (you say you’re not immunocompromised). Get the vaccine if you can. Wash your hands. And if you are struggling still please have a chat with your gp about your anxiety. It’s a horrible feeling, I totally understand. Seek some support.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 07/12/2025 22:51

My son 18 just had it but it was a bit close to his jab and he ended up being pretty unwell missed a whole week of a levels. The cough was the worst thing but he is on the mend now.

I got it too. Much more mild as my jab was in Oct I shock it off in 3 days but had same symptoms just lesser duration and intensity.

Dd and dh so far seem fine. Both jabbed as well.

I will pay for it at the local boots, I didn’t realise you could (sorry if I sound stupid) I thought they were reserved for the immune compromised and elderly etc. didn’t realise you could just go and pay for it.

However my DH won’t have it done, says it’s pointless and he doesn’t want to, says I’m making a fuss about nothing. He works in a school so very likely to pick it up and pass it on here.

You only know what you know. You can book it online:

You might still catch it if vaccinated, but it will be milder and help protect others.

My son is severely asthmatic he developed influenza a and yes he was poorly with it and ended up in hospital but honestly he was absolutely fine during and afterwards, so long as you know to keep up with paracetamol and ibuprofen when they have a fever and know when to get them to a GP or hospital if that maybe needed then you have nothing to overly worry about, I know it is hard I have been there 100 times over with the health anxiety but I can assure you your child will be fine 🙂

mrsfollowill · 07/12/2025 23:04

We all have it to some extent in this house- mainlining Lemsip capsules 37 million tissues - total snotfest and heating whacked on 20C all day. No young kids thankfully just 2 grumpy 50 + yrs olds and a healthy 20 something who will bounce back.

Tiswa · 07/12/2025 23:04

We have just had it. DS and I didn’t feel well at all but managed at home DH just one day off DD two days off.
it was a nasty virus not the worst (swine flu and pleurisy for me and Scarlet Fever for DS) and we coped

RollyPollyBatFace · 07/12/2025 23:05

To all the people helpfully linking to online pharmacies to book - there are no appointments available. You may get lucky but I’ve searched a 50 mile radius of Boots stores and not a single appointment to be had

so you’ll probably have to ring round all your local pharmacies and hope you get lucky

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 07/12/2025 23:06

Get the jab tomorrow and crack on.

Jk987 · 07/12/2025 23:09

Get the jab then! It’s widely available for £20!

My DS has but I haven’t as I’m not immune compromised or anything. I’ve not been offered it.

But I’ve heard the flu spray/jab isn’t making any difference to the current strain this year.

because it is based on last years strain...

You’re right, I’ve just had it, even after having the flu vaccine back in Oct. it’s awful although I am immunocompromised so it might’ve been worse for me as my husband & children have had it too, but not as bad.
Try not to worry, theres nothing much you can do to avoid it tbh. Just get plenty of rest if you do get it.

Alpacajigsaw · 07/12/2025 23:21

Unless you’re in a high risk group you’ll likely just feel shit for a couple of weeks and then be ok.

Kickinthenostalgia · 07/12/2025 23:21

our house has had it, mixed bag of symptoms, no it wasn’t Covid as DP took a test. I just had a cough and some dizziness and a touch of laryngitis started Tuesday almost gone. DS had it last week, hot cold, headaches and a bit of nausea. DP had the same as me but had the runny nose. He’s had the flu jab, neither me or DS have had one. Dd is the only one not taken down by it. She had the flu up the nose vaccination. Tbh she literally gets sick every December so I wouldn’t be surprised. My mum had the same as me but a little more enhanced, non of us have been floored by it though.

PotatoFan · 07/12/2025 23:22

it was in the news about the flu jab not doing much for this strain of flu as the virus mutated after the flu jabs were created. Had my flu jab and was still in bed for more than a week with it and off work for two weeks

Same. Had a week of fever and chills, dizziness and night sweats, and now a week of the worst cough of my life. Illest I’ve been and I had the jab, but no one has caught it from me - husband, child (both vax’d), colleagues (mix of vax and not). Thought that was interesting.

ilovesooty · 07/12/2025 23:28

bozzabollix · 07/12/2025 21:34

There’s an easy fix to this, buy the flu jab.

I know a few people who’ve had it including me. It had me properly done in for about a week, but it’s taking a long time to feel properly well again. I’m self employed and don’t want to lose more money so am ploughing through but it’s not pleasant. Absolutely fatigued and low.

You’re ok though, you can get that flu jab sorted. My husband had the jab and has been the only well person here so it does work.

I've been paying for the flu jab for years before I was eligible for a free one. I live alone and have had flu once and was horribly ill so decided after that to protect myself as much as I could.

I'm now self employed. I wasn't eligible for the free covid jab this year so I paid for it. Time is money and I try to avoid time off work.

Not necessarily OP. Being panicked and terrified about getting the flu is a bit extreme.

I think you need to address your health anxiety as well.

Oh I forgot about the cough. I had that for two weeks more after the two weeks off work sick

PandoraAvatar · 07/12/2025 23:36

I have just recovered from the flu, it was awful. My DH and DS didn't get it, they'd both been immunised. I recommend getting the flu jab at a pharmacy.

Rhayader · 07/12/2025 23:42

You might struggle to get the vaccine now. You will need to shop around and keep checking for cancellations; our local boots is totally booked out. DH and I got them in October.

Ranoutofideasfortheelves · 07/12/2025 23:52

CheshireCat1 · 07/12/2025 21:25

I’m coming to the end of it, have been ill for nearly two weeks. I had the flu jab in October because I’m immunosuppressed.
Its really knocked me for six but I’m slowly recovering. I know quite a few people that have it, some not as bad as others.

What were your symptoms please?
