To cook a dish with alcohol free wine for children?

I want to make chicken casserole and one of the ingredients is white wine.
Would you put alcohol free wine in for children?
Older children are 8 and 10 but also youngest one is a toddler.
Or any other alternative suggestions if you probably wouldn’t put it in.
We’re talking 100ml.

I've always just used regular wine in caseroles, bolognaise and risotto for family meals. If you are worried just leave it out. Ironically now the kids are older I use it less because I've virtually given up drinking so never have an open bottle in the house. I think the flavour does suffer but I'm not going to open a bottle of wine just to stick half a glass in a meal so we put up with it.

I find the red wine stock pots good (I don’t cook with any “normal” wine as my DP is in recovery) but they’re de alcoholicized or however you spell it!

gogomomo2 · 07/12/2025 19:24

Fine to use normal wine, the alcohol evaporates during cooking and one glass between multiple portions it’s hardly anything to begin with

Siarli · 07/12/2025 19:25

Alcohol disappears on cooking you only get the flavour. Ask any French housewife but I wouldnt give children a beef bourguinon made with a whole bottle of wine as they do in southern France far too rich. A glass of wine in the stock is fine. However if you are making a trifle don't add sherry. The alcohol is not converted because you o arnt cooking the dessert so make a separate pud for the kids!!

Talkinpeace · 07/12/2025 19:26

Toddlers act drunk before you give them wine
just use normal wine

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/12/2025 19:28

You're right that alcohol doesn't fully burn off, but 100ml in a dish shared by multiple people is going to be about as alcoholic as orange juice!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/12/2025 19:30

Three HOURS to cook off the alcohol?! What are you cooking over, a match head? Alcohol boils off really fast, it's why you're always told not to boil mulled wine!

I can't have alcohol in any form, but people cook with it all the time and I am fine with that, have never yet had an allergic reaction to any dish made with wine, because the alcohol is either all gone or so diluted that it's basically non existant.

NotDavidTennant · 07/12/2025 19:35

It's half a glass of wine (a lot of which will boil off) split between several portions. It's not going to get anyone drunk, even a toddler.

Siarli · 07/12/2025 19:35

That's if you drink it!' You can always cook your casserole on the stove and as the French do add and reduce the wine before you add the stock. You can also buy red or white wine stock melts. Personally unless you hold strict religious beliefs that is you are or serving the dish to Muslims or strict abstainers like the Salvation Army I would not lose any sleep over this.you could use dealcoholised wine but you might as well put blackcurrant squash into the meal, lol. Just dont worry it will be fine. Don't believe me? Ask Mary Berry, she adds wine..and has several grandchildren!

Peridoteage · 07/12/2025 19:38

I would put ordinary wine in. Half a glass into 4 or 5 portions is sod all & the alcohol largely cooks off unless its a very quick recipe like a flash fried steak or fish.

Notmyreality · 07/12/2025 19:39

Just use regular wine fgs

Mt563 · 07/12/2025 19:41

Did the 3hours idea come from AI?

Bitzee · 07/12/2025 19:49

It takes a few hours to totally burn off but if it’s a fairly long cook time, only 100ml in the entire dish and a toddler isn’t exactly going to be eating loads of it then I wouldn’t worry about it. You wouldn’t second guess a glass of orange juice and that has trace amounts of alcohol. I put a large glass in tonight’s spag bol but it served 6 and cooked for 3 hours so I was happy serving it to the kids (4 and 8).

Bearbookagainandagain · 07/12/2025 19:50

For my toddlers I use normal wine/alcohol and reduce it down with the aromatic vegetables before adding the stock etc.

You can also burn off the alcohol by lighting it. That's the "proper" way but I'm lazy and always think I'm gonna set my clothes on fire 😅

Rosamutabilis · 07/12/2025 19:56

Ha do you think any French mother would worry about less than a small glass of wine in a whole dish? Of course she wouldn't! Just use normal wine.

Sticklebricks · 07/12/2025 20:00

Nobody has ever got drunk from chicken casserole

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 07/12/2025 20:08

3 hours????? 🤣🤣🤣

sliceoffun · 07/12/2025 20:09

Thank you for your replies. I think I just frightened myself because I searched it up and found this but the majority think it ok so I’ll just cook it.

I wouldn’t bother. It’s such a tiny amount of alcohol: they cant get intoxicated from it.

I cook dishes at least twice a week with booze.

Yep but this is an absurdly cautious interpretation: its more like a disclaimer. The amount of alcohol in a sauce is nowhere near enough to get intoxicated or trigger a reaction. Unless one of your kids has an allergic reaction to alcohol they will be fine.

elliesmummy19 · 07/12/2025 20:29

I use normal wine for cooking for my 6 year old. Have done since she was tiny. It’s fine.

TryMee · 07/12/2025 20:32

I just shove a bit of wine in. Can’t be doing with all this anxiety about pointless things. Do you think you might need to get some help for your anxiety?

Haribomum7 · 07/12/2025 20:33

I always use wine, the alcohol evaporates anyhow.

edwinbear · 07/12/2025 20:35

OP DH is a chef. He cooks all the time for our kids & other people’s kids. This is absolutely fine and please don’t use substitutes, it won’t taste as good and kids learning what good food tastes like is so much more important than a tiny bit of cooked off alcohol.

sliceoffun · 07/12/2025 20:35

Very similar but I think this was where it said over 2.5 hours so I looked up and several sources said 3 hours.
I meant to have posted this one as someone asked where I’d got that information.
