about in laws constant burping?

They are staying and the burping is CONSTANT. From both of them. I'm not uptight and really don't mind the odd burp but this is just excessive and it's setting my teeth on edge.

They've always been like this but I think I've just got less and less tolerant to annoying noises the older I've got.

AIBU???

Perhaps,if dh wants to see them he goes and stays with them instead

Ah… tis the season of goodwill, and the time to spend time with people you really don’t want to spend time with. And people wonder why I can’t be bothered with Christmas. So many posts from people complaining about family members and their burping and farting habits. Just ignore it and don’t bother inviting them again if it bothers you so much. Love them, love their wind 😜

JDM625 · 07/12/2025 16:08

Maybe another thing to try. Next time one of them does it:
'Gosh Barbara, I'm really worried about the amount of belching you and Bob are doing. Have you had that looked into? Would you like to me get you some gaviscon when I'm out tomorrow?'

Another idea:
'We are trying to teach DD good manners, would you mind not laughing every time you burp in front of her- you disgusting pigs'😊

What are they eating or drinking that’s making them burp? Can you serve only bland things. I literally can’t remember the last time I burped so I’m struggling to see how they can be doing it constantly without a reason.

Sometimes it's nothing at all, I've watched them do it on an empty stomach.

They only eat bland food anyway!!

A good pro-biotic (30 billion) will soon sort out the burping, if it's not otherwise health related. Unfortunately if you get accustomed to burping freely in your own home, it's difficult to hold it in outside.😬

I’m another one who can’t remember the last time I burped.
Their manners are disgusting.

I think this is what it is tbh, they just think it's normal.

They don't say bless you when people sneeze either, or wash their hands before eating. Which I was always brought up to do.

Fact is as you age your body lets you down.

I know many other elderly people who don't do it. My 90 year old Gran has terrible digestive issues and if she burps manages to cover her mouth.

Large Gaviscon cocktail? Charcoal biscuits?

Maybe I'll sneak some gaviscon into tonight's trifle 😂

It’s gross, but tbf my issue would be stopping myself getting the giggles. I’m 58 and burps still crack me up for some reason. #shamefaced
(To clarify, it is most definitely bad manners and I don’t do it myself. No idea why it makes me laugh when other people do it. But no, OP, your ILs should not be doing this in someone else’s house.)

PolyVagalNerve · 07/12/2025 16:31

Filthy flatulent fuckers finking they funny with their foulness -

i would call it out by saying to the 3 year old in front of them - “just say you know Flossie, people don’t usually do this as it’s really rude and actually quite disgusting for people pushing out their stomach farts into peoples breathing space ! “

I would also say “ugh I can smell your putrid innards”

and “ your diet must be so rancid to make u two so gassy -“

and “you remind me of the book about that the couple “The Twits” - they are really gross too”

ooh I could keep going !!! 😂😂😂

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 07/12/2025 16:53

I read the farting thread too and I just cant understand the number of replies saying oh the poor dears they can't help it. How is this acceptable? Would you do it at work? Or on public transport? Does everyone have a right to behave like this?

ResusciAnnie · 07/12/2025 16:57

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/12/2025 15:28

How the hell do you hold in persistent burping? Don’t be daft.

At least leave the room. Vile! My mum belches and it’s foul. She doesn’t enquire with herself at all to wonder why perhaps she might be belching so much. So odd. There’s a reason, find it, change it and you’ll feel better.

Have they got a medical reason for this, like H Pylori or something ?!

Contact GP to request a stool sample is sent to lab for testing, results usually available in a week, treatment discussed in link below
