Inspiring basin plugs

Hi all. Was wondering what is de rigueur nowadays in relation to bathroom basin plugs/popups. We have a chrome plug on a chain that's served well for 20 years, but the chain is always in the way. Looking for something more inspiring, but 'popups' seem so social housing bathroom. Anyone any ideas ? Thanks.

@GarlicBreadStan definitely 🤣🤣🤣 can't believe the original post tho....🤣🤣

Thing is, I genuinely can't tell if OP is trolling or if she's really this... Snobby 😂

I would suggest she is trolling

Backpackers use a squash ball, also to stop spiders crawling out of the plug hole.
Maybe if your bathroom is sport “inspired”.

Just in case this IS a real post:

We installed pop up ones in the sink and bath when we renovated 8yrs ago. We don't have a water softener and they have both now furred up to the point they are unusable. We are replacing them both with old school plugs on chains because we will be renting it out soon.

shellyleppard · 07/12/2025 14:48

@GarlicBreadStan a bit of both maybe?? 😏

CrossChecking · 07/12/2025 14:55

When I visit people the first thing that I do is ask to go to the bathroom so I can inspect their plugs and find out what class they are.

I'm crying with laughter at "social housing bathroom", because how in any way is that related to a pop-up basin plug? This has got to be a troll post

I have no idea where she's got pop up plug=social housing.

Maybe she only visits people in Social Housing & they all have pop up plugs.maybe she hasn't been to any privately owned houses in the last 30 years??

or has never visited a bathroom store?

it's weird that someone who still has a plug on a chain (I can't remember the last time I saw one of those) is being snobby about pop up plugs.

well weird 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

@Joeninety did you consider looking at online bathroom suppliers?

I took my bathroom plug out as I never use it.

Most likely 😂

What have I just read?

Perhaps to make the pop up more inspiring, you could glue a nice little figurine on top. A dolphin perhaps, or a squirrel.

Not a squirrel, something that can breathe under water!!

and no soaking 'dirty things'

Maybe inspire is the wrong word. But I feel people still know where I'm coming from.

At a rough guess I'd say another fucking planet, and I don't think I'm alone in that!

MMAMPWGHAP · 07/12/2025 15:06

The Click clack we have has a tendency to get stuck. Avoid. The pop up ones with the lever behind the tap work better in my opinion.

HmmmCat · 07/12/2025 15:14

My DB had an ordinary plug on a chain, but the chain was attached to a rubber duck instead of to the bath. And TBH the plug wasn’t that ordinary, either: it lit up with water-activated LEDs.

OhDear111 · 07/12/2025 15:18

How can the tilting one get stuck? They aren’t that tight fitting. Like everything else, get a well made one.

Our chain affair is classy, but with the passing of time, I'm getting more and more frustrated with it always dangling about. To the point of impending nervous breakdown. That's why I need a replacement, but something pretty yet functional and not gauche.

In the words of Pamela Shipman ‘You need to get a life Stace!’

Although I must add that our pop up plugs are the bane of my life and our new bathroom is going to have chains (and a shower rail and curtain instead of glass… the bathroom shop people honestly looked at me like I was mad on those 2 counts!).

This is what you need. It will bring taste and sophistication to your bathing moments.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Novelty-Gifts-Colour-Changing-Unicorn/dp/B07KDRVCWK

Oh so that’s what ‘classy’ means.

muddyford · 07/12/2025 16:01

You can't beat a rubber plug on a chain.
Like lightbulbs, there is too much choice these days, at least for me.

Since reading this thread, I've realised that my limescale furred up plugs are called click-clack, you push them down to close and push again to pop up. Not the other pop up with a lever that pushes them up and down. No idea what class that makes me now though? 🤔

OhDear111 · 07/12/2025 21:05

Soft water is a must - full stop.
